How do I deal with it?

Never dealt with it before!

(And I have had it, so no risk to unborn baby right!?)

My DS (2yo) had it a few moths ago. I recommend:

-lots of cool baths with bicarbonate of soda in
-piriton to reduce the itching
-we tried calamine lotion but thought it made the itching worse. I've read that other MNers have tried the calamine cream and found it better but I'm sure someone will come along in a minute about that
-lots of TLC and hugs
-get out and about in the garden for fresh air and as a distraction as you will be climbing the walls if stuck indoors.

Are you bf baby?

There shouldn't be a risk, I was told this by a Dr but I am not a medical person so can't say more.
Try baths with bicarbonate of soda, as many as you can as it will help with itching, fever and give you and your child something to do (playing) Regular doses of calpol, lots to drink and food as required. I gave mine piriton at night to help with itching and sleep. Light layer of clothing if necessary, although mine had no problems running around naked!
I personally don't use calamine lotion, but lots swear by it. I remember it drying and really itching when it was used on me.
Good luck and have fun!

thanks girls.

anyone know if its ok for DD1 to share bath with DD2 or will DD2 catch it that way?

your dd2 may have already caught it is as your dd1 will have been infectious before the spots came out and will be infectious till the spots scab over.

We used calamine aqueous cream, piriton for itching, and bicarb in the bath for dd and the same for ds when he caught it except he was too young for piriton (was 6 months old at the time)

If you have had chicken pox your unborn lo will be fine as you need to have it to pass it on.

jinxed we thought we had got away with DT2 not getting it as DT1 had it 2 wks ago, she came out in spots yesterday and is far more miserable with it than DT1 (who wasn't really poorly at all!) with more spots too, so be prepared for the long haul

jinxed · 01/06/2007 23:08

oh the joy!

Thanks though - DD1 is now awake after an itching fest so we have dosed her up again but she doesnt want to sleep.

Someone PLEASE tell me they sleep better once all the spots are out!

We found piriton good. Also calamine, but I think the effectiveness of that was entirely due to DD feeling better that we'd done something. Calpol we used too.

I was PG at the time (last summer), GP said as long as I'd definitely had it (ie I personally remembered, rather than being told) then he didn't have to do anything. Otherwise they can take blood and see if you're immune.
