13 week old with mild fever, startling in sleep, what to do?

He's a bit snotty, I assume he has the virus DS2 brought home from school, ie cold, night time cough. He has been really restless this evening, and is startling in his sleep every few seconds. Still feeding. I have given him 2.5mls of calpol, but he has burped some of that up. Does this sound like something anyone else has ahd? Should I be doing more? I hate these things coming up at night.

Not a medical person eldestgirl, just bumping until one comes along.

For what it's worth, sounds quite familiar to me. Has he a high fever?

eldestgirl · 31/05/2007 22:10

No, it's over 100 but he just feels a bit hot and irritable. Tbh I think I am just freaking a bit because DS2 is 4, and I have forgotten everything about babies with fever. DH is away on business and I just feel alone and a bit worried.

Oh god yes, it's frightening when they're ill, and you're quite right you DO forget. Don't worry.
Are you able to rouse him when he's asleep?

how about calling nhs direct or even better your out-of-hrs doctor?? even if its nothing, speaking to a professional will give you peace of mind.

i often call friends who are mothers when i'm not sure about children's symptoms. its just nice to bounce things off other people and can be reassuring.

TBH if its over 100 I;d take him to A&E or at least the out of hours GP.

he's so little and IIRC high temp in babies can be dangerous.

The only concerning thing really is the 'startling', might indicate a too-high fever. Keep him cool and watch like a hawk.

Thank you everyone. I couldn't get back to the PC as he was pretty miserable. I phoned my friend who is a DR and she said as long as he was wetting nappies and feeding regularly, and wasn't burning up, he was OK. He fed quite regularly in bed next to me last night (him under a little blanket, me under the duvet!) and I am going to take him to the Doc today. Thanks for the advice. Why does this always happen when your DH is away?
