Please can you offer any opinions on this? I want to rush him to a&e for bloods this evening.
Please can anyone let me know if this is tell tale of melanoma?
32 yr old otherwise healthy
He is a plumber but does not recall specific trauma to the nail
It has appeared within the last day or so
He is very tough and does not always realise when he has hurt himself.
Shall i ask him to go have bloods tonight?

I don’t think a and e would do anything about it. He should see his GP, who will refer on to the melanoma clinic if concerned.

chipsandcurrysaucemonster · 01/08/2018 19:39

I'm sure you will want to double check and go to the Drs but I get these marks on my nails often - usually once they've grown a bit longer than usual and I can never recall a specific trauma to the nail itself. Hope that provides some reassurance

I agree with Anne - I think you'll need a referral from GP. There is a thread on General Health by @ImmortalityMyDarlings detailing her own experience of a black line on her thumb and the process with the GP that may be of use to you.

BeefyCakes · 01/08/2018 19:41

GP appointment tomorrow, I very much doubt a&e will do anything tonight.

If it is, it seems as though you've caught it early. However it's a very rare type of cancer.

Please step away from dr google. He's an arsehole. And get an appointment tomorrow for his gp.

Bezm · 01/08/2018 19:43

Really? Is it a serious accident? Is it a serious emergency? Do you like wasting other people's time? Turn up at A&E with this and you'll firstly have a vvery long wait and secondly get laughed out of town!

takenitall · 01/08/2018 19:43

Thank you so much
I will phone the GP @ 8 am and get him in

It just looks like nail bed trauma to me (source: world's clumsiest person) but if you're concerned about a strong family history gp may be appropriate. Personally I think a&e would be a bit of an over reaction for someone with a physically demanding job, constantly using his hands

IJustHadToNameChange · 01/08/2018 19:48

Considering your hubby's profession, it's more than likely a splinter haemorrhage.

A tiny amount of blood has leak from an injury under the nail.

A melanoma would, under normal circumstances, be more pronounced.

A routine GP appointment would be a better option.

JessyJames · 01/08/2018 19:49

Looks like a splinter haemorrhage to me. It's a tiny bruise under the nail.
Usually harmless but worth getting checked, but definitely not an emergency.

Cel982 · 01/08/2018 19:49

It's worth getting checked out. Not via A&E, though; bloods won't tell you anything. He needs to see his GP in the next week or so for a referral to a melanoma clinic. Don't panic! If it is a melanoma, most are treatable if caught early so if this has just appeared then the odds are in your favour. And it may be something else entirely.

takenitall · 01/08/2018 19:59

Everyone. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. This has been so comforting

MrsSchadenfreude · 01/08/2018 20:01

It doesn’t look like melanoma to me, but worth getting checked out.

Gorrillagirlfanclub · 02/08/2018 11:32

Looks like a liitle bruise or leak of blood from knocking it. I've had them before they just go away after a week or so.

brizzledrizzle · 02/08/2018 11:36

I hope it's all OK.
You sound very anxious, and I can understand that due to his history, but I wonder if you need some support from the GP if anxiety is a common problem for you?

speakingwoman · 02/08/2018 11:38

I know we are criticising Dr Google but let's face it mumsnet is bloody brilliant at this sort of stuff

flumpybear · 02/08/2018 12:02

I doubt melanoma would just pop up that size - plus it's a line so I'd be thinking injury or trauma as others have said too

Talkativeparrot · 02/08/2018 12:56

Get it checked out but i had one for a few months. Turned out to be a splinter haemorrhage which grew out. Turned out I bite down on that thumb nail when I'm nervous. I didn't realise.

takenitall · 02/08/2018 16:01

ive been very ill in the past and i didnt realise until the last minute so i am now understandly anxious about possible health concerns. I dont need support with anxiety though.

Ive found most of the answers here very very helpful.

thaegumathteth · 02/08/2018 16:03

OP with all due respect I think you do need help. It’s not normal to get so worked up, life can be better than that.

Talkativeparrot · 02/08/2018 17:00

To be fair to OP, another poster has been on the forum with a similar problem which could be something more serious. I was stressed when I first got my black line as I'd read that thread.

GlassSuppers · 02/08/2018 17:07

How did he get on at the GP OP?

Hope all was okay.

ImmortalityMyDarlings · 07/08/2018 18:49

So - person with the black line on thumb thread here. Go to GP if it does not go away in say two-four weeks. It is highly likely to be nothing and a trauma-related issue. Keep a photo log as well to track any changes.
