Is this teething?

DS is 13wks and has been frantically chewing fists and drooling for weeks. In the last 3 nights his sleep has gone haywire (was previously good at night, only waking once for a feed) - waking time after time and taking aaaaages to get back to sleep.

The only thing that helps is Calpol which we have given in desperation the last 2 nights after he's been awake nearly 2 hours in the wee hours. After that he sleeps OK.

Have also had two huge (and I mean HUGE) nappies yesterday and today.

No obvious signs of illness or raised temp, is fine during day if occasionally grumpy and feeding quite often.

Surely it's a bit early for teething? Are there other ways I can tell? or is it just a growth spurt?

Sounds like it could be. Their teeth can start moving ages before they actually break through so the fact you can't see anything doesn't mean it isn't.

what mumpbump just said.

My DS2 is going through exactly the same thing and has been for the past couple of months. I thought we'd at least have one tooth showing by now but no!

MegBusset · 31/05/2007 12:42

so is it ok to keep giving Calpol at night if he can't sleep? Don't want to over-medicate but seems to be the only way any of us get some rest...

Yeah we do! I can't seem the harm if you think bubs is in pain or uncomfy????? Plus it's only one dose in 24 hours and they can have a lot more.

Definitely - when ds had all four of his top front teeth coming through at once, we gave him calpol at 22h a couple of times as a preventative, rather than waiting for him to get distressed, to make sure he went through the night reasonably. You don't want to be doing it every night over an extended period, but if it helps them with the pain and you with your sleep, then I think it's fair enough for a short period.
