We have just been to the doctors with ds (for a tummy bug) and, after rountinely examining him, spotted "quite a heart murmur". I know with puppies it's quite common and they often grow out of it - is it the same with babies? Has anyone had experience with this?
Thank you!!

no experience of it in small babies but my mum (68) has had one all her life - never been treated and is just fine.

As far as I know, they're usually harmless especially if your ds is otherwise well.

My neice was born with one as was her dad. His was picked up on a medical at university, hers a couple of hours after she was born. She is now a happy healthy 4 year old, he ran the London marathon last year.

My dd had the same as well, but it was diagnoised as an 'innocent mumur' for which I have to go to the hospital for every 6 months for a routine check. Other than she is a healthly at 18 mth - doesn't affect her.

When DS was very small and ill, the Dr's at the hospital thought they had spotted a heart murmur but when he was re-examined weeks later he was given the all clear.

I was told when babies are ill (ds was in hospital) a heart murmur can be diagnosed incorrectly.

Don't panic, I presume you have been reffered to the hospital?

take her back when she is well to see if its still there. if it is, then see if an echo can be done, but in all liklihood its probably an innocent murmur.

My ds had a check up for a tummy bug at about 13 months and the gp detected one. We had a echo at Harefield heart hospital and it was called an Innocent murmur. Harmless.

Then when dd was born she had one too. We had to have tests in the scbu in hospital before we were discharged. Then went to Harefield again for an echo but it had gone by the time we went. Apparantly they can just go by themselves. And come again.

I'm sure your ds will be fine. Even if it stays I don't think they cause much trouble normally. My sisters fiancee has had one his whole life and he's a strapping rugby player.

My youngest brother had one when he was little - as far as I know it's gone now. It's certainly never been an issue for him - he's in the police force now so he must have passed a medical!

my two eldest have murmurs btw. just need to tell the dentist really.

taffy101 · 31/05/2007 12:05

i have a heart murmur - is just a bit of reflux of blood when valve not shutting completely on each heart beat so makes a whooshing noise. I am not affected by it at all. My son may have one too - is waiting for heart scan. My sister gets one when pg - just extra work the heart is made to do. So mostly they are harmless, but need antibiotics if surgery is ever needed to prevent infection of heart valves. Hope it all turns out ok for you

My son was born with one (an innocent murmur) and they just checked it at each appointment and it was gone by the time he was 9 months old.

DH had his until he was about 11 years then it went away.

Haribosmum · 31/05/2007 12:40

My SILs DS3 had a heart murmor picked up at about 3 months when he was having tests for another problem. She told me they're going to operate when he's a bit older to close the hole but I'm not sure if that's because its quite bad or just normal practise where she lives (New Zealand). But as far as we can tell (from talking to her on the phone he's perfectly fine)

timsmama · 01/06/2007 11:05

thanks guys! your messages were very reassuring, so fingers crossed it's an innocent one - or better still pediatrics won't be able to detect it all all at our appointment in a few weeks time!
