Vit D test

I went to my Gp with muscle pain flu like symptoms and fatigue. I've also gained weight and have high cholesterol. I had blood taken and some of the tests were for R.A and bone profile. About a few days after the surgery called to say Doc now wanted to test my Vit D . I asked why but receptionist didn't know . Can anyone tell me if this is something to worry about. I am a sun worshipper just back from my holidays so to me it's unlikely I'm deficient . Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated x

Vitamin D is extremely common in the UK, you can be deficient even if you love the sun. The fact is, we don't get much of it. A temporary heatwave isn't guaranteed to fix anything.

Nothing to worry about and the treatment is straightforward supplements - prescribed or shop bought depending on your levels.

I mean Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common. Vitamin D is rare!

Thanks for that but I'm wondering why the doc has requested this test after routine bloods . Has it been an afterthought or has my initial blood tests thrown up a problem ?

Bloods taken have thrown up a low reading from your blood tests. I had similar now on supplements.

Tripsytart · 28/07/2018 15:24

So if it shows a low reading they take it again ?

I was put on supplements for my low readings and suggested bloods are tested in another 3months

The receptionist just said the dr wants to test your Vit d levels .. no mention of supplements . Can't get an appt until next week !

medicine is like a complicated decision tree, they are just working their way thru it. Don't think you need to worry.

Tripsytart · 28/07/2018 20:48

Thanks for your replies really appreciate them . It's just I feel so sore and aches are getting worse and I worry that they have picked something up . I just think if the blood test was included in the routine work up then why test again and if it wasn't then what's led them onto this .

It's not a routine test but definitely causes those symptoms.

I had it, and believe me, if you're deficient then once it's right again you'll feel great!

9amTrain · 28/07/2018 21:00

No they probably haven't run the test already and are wanting to repeat it because it's low. They want to test because they haven't yet. If it's low they will prescribe, not repeat it. :)

I have low calcium

You need vit D in order to absorb calcium.

I'm guessing that the first blood test showed the low calcium and has led them now to check your vit D levels.

It isn't anything to worry about.

timeistight · 01/08/2018 10:43

Given your symptoms, I hope they're checking your thyroid as well.

Raised cholesterol is a diagnostic for an underactive thyroid and they should't think about putting you on statins until your thyroid function is optimal.

Thank you all for your kind replies . I will keep you posted.

Had my blood test today and I have low calcium and low phosphate levels. She's testing my Vit D and my PTA levels

Ah yeah I've read they are all related, can't remember how but that should give you a clearer picture of what's wrong. Good luck!
