Cancelling holiday?

We are booked to go on holiday to Portugal in 3 days, but DD1 (our only child) has just started to develop a cold - her nose is streaming, she is struggling to feed and sleep and is really not herself. The question is, should we be thinking about cancelling the holiday or do you think that would be overreacting for something as simple as a cold? We may not lose the money we have paid as we have annual travel insurance, although we're not sure. It is our first trip away with a baby and we're very anxious not to risk her cold turning into something worse due to the flight, heat etc. The last cold she had was not too bad, but the one before that turned into a chest infection requiring antibiotics. Thanks for your help.

For goodness sake Elk...its only a cold!!! Would you stop everything if you had the cold??????

pickledpear · 30/05/2007 22:47

take her to docs day before check her ears are not blocked cause it will be very painful otherwise for her flying

onlyjoking9329 · 30/05/2007 22:49

get her checked by the doctor.

chilledmama · 30/05/2007 22:54

Elk- sorry for being so blunt and unsupportive...get her checked then go on holiday and have a cracking time. eat good food, drink some good wine and play with your DD in the pool. A bit of sun and dry weather will do the world of good!

Thanks for your messages. I stupidly forgot to give her age, which is 7 months.

Go and have her checked over ears, chest etc then take your gp's advice he / she would be the one to have to provide a letter for your insurance anyway if you have to cancel.
For the record I think flying with a nasty cold is a painful experience .

tbh if it is just a cold insurance won't pay out and even with an ear infection you would struggle unless the dr expressly told you not to fly and put it in writing. She will probably be fine, breastfeed/give bottle on take off and landing and use a nasal aspirator (bulb shaped tube) to keep her nose clear. You could also always give Calpol about half an hour before you fly(take sachets and put in plastic bag to get through security) to minimise any pressure pain. Chances are the warmer, drier air will help her anyway, if not make sure you have an EHIC card for her and ask the rep for a local English speaking doctor. Have a good holiday.
