Has anyone heard of this? I am getting my coil out next week as I'm fed up with 13 day long periods. Don't want the mirena coil as the hormones would play havoc with me. Was on Marvelon for years prior to having kids and used to get a colossal migraine every month starting about day 2 of period. The doc at the FP clinic said it was the hormone change and to take the pill continually so I would never have a migraine. This did work but I am now reading that anyone who suffers from migraines should not take a combined pill!!! I did take the minipill prior to getting the coil fitted but kept forgetting to take it. Since having the kids I now seem to suffer dreadful PMT that I never had before. I thought it was just having had the kids but could it be that the combined pill was helping?? I'd been on it for so long I can't remember what life was like before this? I have also now heard about a type of pill mentioned in the thread title but can't find info on it anywhere

Now you see that sounds good the no periods thing (and obv you have more of a reason than most to want this), but how would you know you weren't pg? I need the reassurance of a "period" once a month or I'd be blowing thousands on pregnancy tests.

Sorry, doesn't answer your questions at all.

There isn't a pill on the market in the UK yet that is period free although some women don't bleed at all on cerazette (which is progesterone-only). You can take the combined pill with certain types of migraine so you could speak to your GP about that.

i had endometreosis for which i took 'provera' (progesterone only) for 5 years and no periods. In tablet form it is not recgognised as a contreceptive, but i believe it is what is used in the contrecptive injection you can get. Don't know if it would stop periods for everyone.

My GP told me that because your periods aren't real periods when you're on the pill, it doesn't matter if you carry over your pill/have the contraceptive jab and don't have a period. The reason he said you have a break with your pill packet is so you 'know' you're not pregnant but physically, he said there was no reason not to have one.
The new pill was in the news a couple of weeks ago so not sure when it'll be available.
With regards to your pmt, try Magnesium OK as it's supposed to be great.

Just a little question - if the hormones in mirena "would play havoc" with you why won't the ones in the pill/mini-pill?

The progesterone dose in the mirena is slow release and in theory only is absorbed into the uterus lining (I know, I know - there are a lot of posts here about being affected by it - but I do know lots of women very very happy with it too!) hence there shouldn't be any side effects of it anywhere else - and if there was, no worse than the mini-pill would do (higher dose progesterone in the main).

There is a pill in the states that gives 4 periods a year, but I can't remember its name off the top of my head (seaonale??)

Also an interesting theory that modern woman has too many periods anyway - in that we are designed to reproduce so we should be either pregnant or breastfeeding for much of our reproductive years and so shouldn't technically have so many periods.

Depends on the type of migraine you get as to whether you are allowed the combined pill. Cerazetter is the newer minipill that has a 12hour window to take it rather than the 3 hour one. And it does tend to reduce or stop periods quite well.

HTH!

kateyp · 30/05/2007 14:18

That'll be "cerazette" that is the mini-pill not 'cerazetter', a pill I have named myself!

OK hears the truth about 'The Pill'...
It was invented by a BLOKE

This B*d thought that women liked having a period because it was NATURAL therfore when he wrote the instructions for use it was to be taken for 21 days then have a 'Period' for 7 days (actually a withdrawal bleed not a pperiod at all).

There is no clinical/medical need for such a bleed while on the pill!!!!!!!

Go to GP and work out which pill will suit you best...lets face it, there are ssooo many available there is almost one for every type of person.

Which ever pill you get (apart fgrom mini pill I think) just keep taking it i.e. don't stop from days 22-28, just keep going and you won't have a period!!!!!!

HONEST...that came from one of my best mates whos a GP!!!

chilledmama · 30/05/2007 14:22

Apparently brain not working at full speed...not hears...here's!!!

nailpolish · 30/05/2007 14:23

when the pill ws invented it was intended to be taken every day

woman who were trialling the pill were uneasy at not having a period - they felt it was strange and alos were worried that they wouldnt know straight away if by accidnet they became pg

so it was changed to 3weeks on 1 off

fact!

i did it dyring my nursing college years

chilledmama · 30/05/2007 14:31

Well doesn't change the fact that if you don't want to have a period there is no reason why you need to unless you think you might be pg and want to know!...which helps!!!

I frequently take my pill packets without a break, when I have a holiday or a special night out planned and don't want the hassle - this turns out to be most months! Don't think it does any harm (over and above taking the pill in the first place).
