hello, i've just been offered the Pneu catch-up vaccine for ds2. The thing is although i've had all his others done (apart from mmr as yet cause he starts a seperate course at 18mnths) i'm nervous about yet another vacc??!! I don't really know that much about it and how long the trials have been carried out. Does anyone know any more info? thanks. x

I think there are two things - they are giving a booster of Hib and Men C as there has been a slight increase in Hib cases, and also a new pneumoccocal vaccine which prevents pneumonia and pneumoccocal meningitis, which is well worth having, as it kills and seriously harms children each year.

thanks tortoishell, i think i'm nervous about it cause ds2 is only a few weeks away from starting his course of mmr vaccines.....it all just seems like sooo much

My DD had it done alongside her MMR. I think it is called "Prevara" or something like that. I can't really comment on it because as I say she had MMR done at the same time and 24 hours later she had very high fever and was like that for 3 days. And as Tortoisehell says it is worth having.

Chugnuts · 30/05/2007 14:45

It's this one here.

Dd had hers a few weeks ago at the same time as her MMR and had no problems afterwards.

The nurse said that older babies like dd(14mths) will have it separately but that younger babies now have it as part of their other immunisations IYSWIM.

I think all the ladies (or at least their dc!) on my post natal thread have had this now, without problem (except one who reacts badly to every jab, and I can't remember if he had this one or not).

How close is this jab to the start of his mmr stuff? They have to have 4 weeks between all vaccines, unless they are done at exactly the same time.

You might also want to search for some posts by Amyjade if you are doubting whether he should have this - she lost her dd to the virus that this vaccine protects against, and has talked very poignantly about it on other vaccination threads.

thanks for all your help everyone, i'm going to sleep on it but am very likely to get it done tomorrow. x

billiejo, I'm in the same situation as you(only I haven't booked the singles yet).

It seems the new vaccine is worth doing in "most poeples" opinion, but I understand how you feel.
DHs first reaction when he heard it was a new vaccine was to say "NO, we're not having it" and he normally leaves these decisions to me so obviously felt strongly about it
