Opticians please help - glasses feel wrong!

Hi, I hope someone who works in optician shop can help. I recently had my eyes tested and have never previously worn glasses. Had regular eye checks growing up and then when I joined the military and did my pilot's license medicals. Never had problems with my eyes or any major health problems until last year when I was diagnosed with extremely high blood pressure exacerbated by a stressful situation that has now passed.

I do notice my distance vision is a tiny bit blurry now and went for an eye test. My prescription came out -0.50 and - 0.75 although my eyes were tested when I had a headache and late in the day. I sort of got shunted through the whole process and ended up on the shop floor being told to choose frames but I had no idea. I went back the following week to tell them that I hadn't been happy with how they treated me but also because the glasses feel too strong for my eyes and actually cause my eyes to hurt.

They told me that it is just a period of adjustment needed and weren't really listening when I tried to tell them how the glasses were making me see and feel. However, when I wear the glasses for distance/driving, I can only describe it as everything looking too crisp and rather like watching a TV with the contrast turned up too high or if you have ever looked through binoculars and overadjusted.

Is that normal?

I don't have anything to compare it to as have never worn glasses. My close vision is perfect and I only have this late onset mild myopia in the last year or two.

Can I piggyback on your thread please OP? I was going to ask for help with my new specs too, so I'l watch out in case you get any use full help.
Did you get lenses with non reflective coating? I find it gives me a lot of 'aura' around objects and it very distracting, too crisp, as you say. I also don't get thinned down lenses as I find they distort my peripheral vision. Almost every optician I've talked to about my lense issues has basically patted me on the arm and said 'there there dear', and changed the subject.

Her0utdoors of course :)

Yes, I got lenses with the non-reflective coating but it isn't an aura that I get but rather like everything being too crisp to the point where it is uncomfortable. I too have had that reaction especially being a newbie to wearing specs although I don't wear them all the time. They just feel too strong even given though I have been told it is just because my eyes are not used to it.

Also, my prescription is so mild that I don't need the thinner glasses - it is at the point where I am wondering about getting an eyesight done elsewhere for comparison instead of the well known high street place I went to.

I was having lots of problems with my contact lenses/and glasses last Year-I ended up going to 3 different opticians and all of the prescriptions differed hughly.
I did get new glasses which I am happy with now and stuck with the last optician I went to.
Maybe it would be best to go elsewhere-however this does end up getting quite expensive..

My eyes have gotten worse every year since I was 13.

The first 2 weeks I'd a I had to get used to the extreme sharpness of everything .
It's a pain but my eyes adjusted.
Same with contact lenses

However with my most recent prescription my contact lenses hurt my eyes so much I had terrible migraines , I went back and asked them if I can stick with my old perscription, she said yes and ordered my lenses, no headaches !.
However my myopia is so bad if I can't see facial expressions unless the person is within touching distance ...

Maybe your glasses arnt sitting correctly on your face ? ,I know if my glasses are slightly off it causes me headaches .

popea - how are the glasses now, have you adjusted to them. The advice they gave was correct, it does take a little time to adjust especially if you haven't worn them before.

If you haven't adjusted yet though, you need to go back and ask for a re-test. Eye prescriptions and testing methods can vary. In most practices re-test rates are 2-3% and we end up changing the prescription around 2% of the time.
Some people also prefer a slightly stronger prescription and others a slightly weaker.
