Hi op I've had this years ago. I was told by the hospital it could mean pre cancerous cells. I had treatment and 20 yrs later have had no problems

Hanna78 · 16/07/2018 00:02

I have read all the nhs websites and my doctors have reassured me that its nothing to do with cancer. They say its teo seperate conditions and sometimes u can be born with it too xx.

Sometimes it can mask abnormal cells so thats why they need to do a colposcopy and check it out with a camera that its nothing serious. Did u have colposcopy? Xx

Yes, almost 30 years ago when I was 18.

Had it treated at the GPs with something cold (liquid nitrogen or something?) and haven't given it much thought since. I have never had an abnormal smear.

BrokenWing · 16/07/2018 00:12

I had a colposcopy in 1992 and a cone biopsy, fairly straight forward procedure, bit of cramping after but paracetamol helped. You'll probably get to see your cervix on TV!

I know it's easier said than done as I was young and petrified when I had it, but it is really quite a common problem and procedure, try not to worry too much. I know 7 women who have had it now and none needed any follow up treatment other than more regular smears for a couple of years.

Hanna78 · 16/07/2018 00:15

Thanks for reassurance ladies. Broken wing was the cone biopsy for erosion or abnormal cells? My gynaecologist is telling me its nothing to do with cancer as cervical cancer is caused by hpv but i want to know if anyone had any experiences xx

OP posts:
3dogsandcounting · 16/07/2018 00:17

Yes, treated about 17 years ago, I think frozen. Not thought much of it since.

BrokenWing · 16/07/2018 00:23

It's so long ago now I can't actually remember, I was bleeding after sex and had a smear, there was something about a small change in cells, and the cone biopsy (had a local anethestic for it) was to check but everything was clear.

As far as I remember reading (pre Internet and Dr Google which was maybe a blessing) and being told at the time cervical erosion is common when you are on the pill?

The cervical erosion was frozen/burnt during the colposcopy, then 6 weeks to recover with no sex, and no problems since.

Hanna78 · 16/07/2018 00:25

Did u have nornal smears?

OP posts:
Hanna78 · 16/07/2018 00:27

So broken wing have you had normal smears since 1992? Xx oh so no abnormal cells they just treated the erosion x

OP posts:
BrokenWing · 16/07/2018 00:46

Yep every one I have had since has been normal

Hanna78 · 16/07/2018 00:49

Have you ever heard it being linked to cervical cancer? I have 3 doctors and my gynaecologist say its nothing to do with cancer and all nhs websites say its nothing dangerous and its caused by being on pill after pregnancy or too much oestrogen. Xx but i did find one blog saying it could cause cervical cancer x

OP posts:
3dogsandcounting · 16/07/2018 01:00

Hanna, I have just private messaged you. Ignore the one blog and listen to the highly qualified gynaecologist. It is not a sign of cancer. It is very common and easily treated. Take care.

Lunde · 16/07/2018 01:13

I first suffered cervical erosion in the 1970s yet all my smear tests for the past 40 years have been clear and I have never needed any treatment for it.

The medical information from the nhs says it is a very common condition that has no link to cancer development.
"Cervical ectropion can be caused by hormonal changes, pregnancy and being on the pill.It is not linked to the development of cervical cancer or any other condition that causes cancer."
www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk/resources/patient-information/gynaecology/Cervical-ectropion.pdf

So I would be treating unreliable scare-mongering blogs with a big pinch of salt and ignore

Hanna78 · 16/07/2018 01:19

Thanks you for reassuring me lovely ladies Xx i need to sort my anxiety and depression out and believe the doctors and specialists and nhs websites not some blog. Thankyou for all ur support xx

Yes I had it.

I also had cervical cancer.

I can tell you that the two are ABSOLUTELY NOT related. I would be the first person warning you if they were.

Basically there are two types of cells on the surface of your cervix. The outside visible when looking directly in ones and the ones that line the inside. Usually when looking directly in a small circle of the inner cells are visible. Ectopy is just when more of these cells from the inside are on the outside, so can see a larger circle or patch. Neither of these types of cells when healthy are any problem at all, they are completely normal. Ectopy happens very often in younger women and women taking the pill. I was both, so no problem.

The cells from the inside, which you have more of on the outside, are more sensitive to touch, meaning occasionally there may be bleeding during sex or a bit of blood on a smear test. Again no problem if this is why. Ectopy is harmless.

If it bothers you ie bleeding and other reasons are ruled out (important), you can have it frozen in a couple of minutes, doesn’t hurt, no bid deal at all.

Separately, the area where precancerous cells start is called the transformation zone, it’s the boundary between these two types of cells. It does not matter where their area actually is and we are talking mm, a smear has to have adequate cells on it and anyone performing. Smear should be taking from the transformation zone. Make sure you have a gynae who will actually be shining a light in and looking properly, that would always be my advice, you’ll get a good smear sample. It’s very common.

I know literally a billion more things about this than I would wish on anyone and I can assure you, absolutely no link whatsoever. It’s very common and most women don’t even know it’s there, because it’s not a big deal and just our bodies.

Make sure your smears are done properly and if you have any unexplained symptoms, chase. If your doctors don’t give you sensible answers, get double and ripple checked with other doctors because it’s just not damn worth it. However that is my advice for absolutely everyone and for unusual smear or symptom concerns. Not ectopy. Ectopy is absolutely nothing to worry about and here is no connection to anything worrying, it’s a very common way for our bodies to be and not harmful at all.

There’s no connection and nothing to worry about. As I said, I’d be the first one insisting you take absolute insistent reaction if there was a connection.

Sleep easy.

Just make sure they’re performing and reading your smears properly, ectopy or not.

Hanna78 · 16/07/2018 01:52

Thankyou for taking time out to reply to me . Thanks for the reassurance i just been reading scary stories online and looking at blogs which made me breakdown . Im sorry to hear about your cervical cancer and i hope u are on the mend. Thankyou xx

OP posts:
LuMarie · 16/07/2018 02:14

Thank you.

Don’t read blogs. Don’t ask “Dr Google”. Academic Research papers are where I get all my information, plus multiple specialists. They should all independently be saying the same thing. Plus things I’ve already made sure are true by becoming an unwilling expert myself.

Really, I promise, I’d be the first one to be shouting if there was any possible connection, but there’s just not.

As I said, completely separately please do be very vigilant and proactive with smear because god help me mistakes are made, but that’s my advice to everyone.

For ectopy though, you’re fine. Go double check on the smears just so I can sleep for you. Ok I don’t ever sleep, but metaphorically for me, please take care of yourself!

As for ectopy however, if I did sleep, i would over that. There’s no connection.

Absolutely not. So don’t worry.

Hanna78 · 16/07/2018 10:43

Awwwww i hope you really do overcome any problems you have and manage to sleep. Thankyou very much for ur support and reassurance. Xx
