My dd is 5.5yrs old & suffers badly from constipation

The doc give me lactulose a few months ago to get her moving, but it did her no good.

Now she has another bad bout of constipation & is rubbing her tummy & saying she is sore but can't go.

Can I give her anything??

my dd1 seemed to have bouts of this - one thing we noticed was when we changed her juice to apple and pear and I always water it down - that way she is probably getting just 1 cup of juice in a day and at least 3 or 4 water.

The other thing we have tried that works is something called paralax or parachoc - not sure if you can get it in the UK - sort of a step before movicol.

another thing I make for dd1 - gloop

1 ripe pear, peeled, cored and sliced 3 pitted prunes 1 teaspoon dark brown or Muscovado sugar Stew gently, in a saucepan until soft. Cool, then liquidise until smooth. Larger quantities can be made up and frozen in ice trays or small baby food jars. Babies seem to love it straight off the spoon, older kids like it with yoghurt, ice cream or on breakfast cereal. Might be worth a try.

i try to put it in her yoghurt or again just water it down as a juice.

My DS was constipated as soon as he was potty trained (traumatised by the first poo he saw come out of his bum ). The situation got really bad over a period of time and he ended up with a really sluggish bowel.
He (now aged 7) is very aware of what he eats and how to avoid being constipated.

  1. We don't do juice, it can be counterproductive as you are replacing the much needed water. Watered down juice or plain water is best.
  2. Whole grains ... no processed grains. No white bread, not even plain brown wholemeal (which is as processed as white bread) ... bread has to be grainy, the grainier the better. We get a brand called 'Burgen' here ... brilliant stuff, or Vogel's is good too. Brown rice, hardly ever do white rice. Even weetabix is too processed IMO ... although my children love it. So we have weetabix some mornings but porridge or whole grain toast mainly.
  3. 5 - 8 portions of vegetables and fruit a day. He pretty much manages to go every 1 - 2 days but I get edgy when it gets longer than 3 days.
