Is there anyway I can make Ds4 cough?

He's caught the horrid cough and cold from the big Ds's and sounds so rattly and chesty but obviously can't cough/clear his throat to make it sound better.

Poor little thing.

Is there amagic way of making him cough?

How old is he now ?? Does he laugh yet, perhaps make him laugh and see if that will make him cough.

How old are they when they can laugh, have completely forgotten.

LadyTophamHatt · 28/05/2007 15:12

Just over 4 months.

Thats a good idea with the laughing, I'll try that although he's laughs tend to be little squeals rather than chuckles.

Is he bothered by it?

It might sound annoying but if it isn't upsetting him it might be best to just leave it.

If you get him to look at something bright he might sneeze, that could help?

The only way of making him cough that I can think of involves a packet of fags and y'know what mumsnet's like: one teensy suggestion and the healthnut police are after you....

Did you try a steamy room?

kreamkrackers · 28/05/2007 15:14

dd1 wouldn't cough. she often ended up in hospital with chest infections because of this. was told the worst thing to give a baby is cough medicine as it stops them coughing.

it's hard to make them cough though.

perhaps rub his back and do gentle patting.

could you put your steriliser on in the room with you to get the room a bit steamy as that might help to clear his chest a bit.

snuffle baby was a good product, i would put this on dd1's vest and it seemed to help her breath a bit better.

apart from that i have no idea. hope he recovers soon.

You can shift it sometimes by a little chest tapping. Lay him face down across your knees and gently tap his back with two fingers together.

LadyTophamHatt · 28/05/2007 15:20

No its not really bothering him, he's a little grumpy and just wants cuddles but I think its bother me more than him.
He has had afew doses of medicine but I doubt its doing anything at all by the sound of him.

I'll stop giving him anymore now, I hadn't thought of the fact that it stops them coughing....

I was in the bathroom with me earlier but the big ds's kept opening the door so any steam wouldn't have stayed in there.

I'll take him to the doctors tomorrow, he's menat to be having his jabs but I'll have to postpone it again.
At least if I take him they'll see I'm not lying and avoiding the jabs.

There are two types of cough medicine, I think.

The ones that stop you couging (for tickly, dry coughs)

The ones that make you cough up more phlegm (for chesty coughs)

Neither work wonderfully ime, tbh, so I doubt you'll have done harm.

Oh poor lad, and poor you - its horrible hearing them needing to cough, and not being able to.

Have lots of experience of this with dd2, who had bronchiolitis at 4 weeks (badly) and also has a restricted airway due to floppy larynx: can't tell you how often I've cleared my throat willing her to do the same. Nights and nights and nights of it - whilst she actually just got on with having a mucousy throat/chest and was relatively unconcerned

If he's not ok, ie can't breathe, he will cough, honestly he will. I've heard enough small babies cough to know they can, but they only do it if they really need to - IYSWIM - otherwise they just live with the rattles and congestion, and much more comfortably than their poor Mums do.

Though that said, my brother swears by Tixylix expectorant for his LO: he used to get a lot of chest infections at the end of colds, then db started giving him Tixylix after naps (keeps them awake coughing otherwise) and first thing in morning, and hey presto - not a chest infection since. No idea if it was coincidence, but have done the same in case!

Hope he's better soon!

I took Ds4 to the doctors this morning and GP said he has "Upper respiratory congestion"

A technical term for a cough

I can feel his chest rattling, poor little thing. It sounds awful.
I wish I could cough for him.....

Steam - and I add a couple of crystals of menthol (any chemist sells it, it's cheap)to a sink of very very hot water, and steam the baby

I also tried baby massage with Boots infant rub that has camphor and something else in - not sure if it helped but she seemed to enjoy it, didn't do her any harm!
