My 6mth old has had diarrhoea for the past couple of days on and off.He is still taking his bottles but I've stopped his food, I've tried giving him oral rehydration fluids but he wont take them, he seems well in himself is there anything else i could do for him to stop this?

leander, he shouldn't have anything except rehydration fluid with diarrhoea - it won't stop as long as he goes on having milk.

He will drink the rehydration fluid when it is the only thing available. It will make him hungry, and cross, probably, but it's the only thing to do!

threeangels · 22/07/2002 20:05

I agree with janh that you need to avoid all milk/dairy products until it subsides.

batey · 22/07/2002 21:03

Same hear, both my dds went through many times like this. it's hard, but at least 24hrs of no dairy. Good Luck.

Thanks for all your advise I tried starving him but had to give in and give him a bottle for bed, he was unable to settle and was extremely upset.Sobernow it seems likely that it his teeth as hes very drooly and chewing on everthing and as i said he is ok + his normal cheeky self. I'll see how he is in the morning.

Just to say when I have sent emails via contactus it can (sometimes) take a few days for the recipient to get the message. HTH

My dd is now filling her nappy every time she farts, though she doesn't seem to realise she is doing it. She is fine in herself but her poos are very smelly and very messy and I'm fast running out of nappies! What does anyone suggest for calming her bowels down? She has been like this for 3 days now.

Mopsy · 25/07/2002 18:24

How old is she Rhubarb?

She'll need to stop all milk for 24hrs and if possible just drink lots of clear fluids, if she really has to eat then toast or similar is good.

Rhubarb · 26/07/2002 11:44

She's 2. Her appetite is fine, I don't know if it is a bug she has picked up or something she has eaten, but this is day 4 now - yesterday just after I signed off from Mumsnet I put her on our bed for a time and when I lifted her off she had pooed so much it had leaked through her clean nappy to spread all over our bed! Nice! She did say on Wednesday that she had tummy ache and wanted to lie on a cushion, but I don't know if that is because she heard me discussing it with a friend or because she really did have tummy ache. Yesterday she looked very pale and had a blue tinge under her eyes, but in herself she is absolutely fine.

Should I just give her plain foods like toast then? What about yoghurt and fruit? Is there nothing that will stuff her up a bit?! I'm fast running out of nappies here! (and clean sheets!)

MABS · 26/07/2002 11:56

My doc always recommends bananas and boiled rice if they've got tummy problems - bizarre I know but it does work for mine.

susanmt · 26/07/2002 12:08

Yes MABS we use the BRAT diet if they have a tummy bug - Bananas, rice, apple jiuce and toast! It certainly seems to work and both mine get very constipated if they have too much banana.

Rhubarb · 26/07/2002 14:14

Gave her a banana at lunch, will give her one at tea time too, with lots of rice! Thanks guys!

My 9 year old was off school yesterday. Started with sore throat then at lunch time (no food all morning) he was sick, then slept all afternoon, seemed brighter at tea time so he had some bread and cheese.
At about 8 he started being sick and has been on and off all night. When he got up this morning he has started having diarrhoea all the time, he was having so many accidents he is now permanently sat on the loo.
I have been keeping him going on water, but should I get him some medicine to stop the diarrhoea. I can't remember whether you should let it continue until it stops naturally or whether you can give something for it.
