What is hayfever cough like? Does it linger on?

For years, I suffered from sinus infections. I got them under control somewhat by recognising a pattern in that for me sinus problems came about with or after a cold.

About 3 weeks ago, I was in the kitchen trying to make a sandwich but my eyes were watering and were very sore. I was hardly able to keep them open. It was as if I was chopping onions. I suspected then, hayfever was at play. I started to take an over the counter anti histamine.

Over the course of the following two weeks, I got worse. There were sinus symptoms and a cough set in. The cough became vicious and aggressive until I had no choice in the matter but to go to the doctor.

My doctor said, this year is horrific with pollen and hayfever and the pollen kicked something off in me with hayfever/sinus and that hayfever, sinus and asthmt is all connected.

I was prescribed medication. Steroid tablets and a nasal spray and other tablets.

Steroid tablets is all gone now. My cough is a lot calmer but it's still lingering. I wonder is this common?

There's pressure on my back, left right and centre from work and my aging parents. I'm hardly allowed to digest a meal after a day's work. Many times food is rushed and goes down the wrong way too. This is also adding to my coughing. I reckon. I'm ok right now, but excercise and night time, my cough acts up big time. Is that common with hayfever?
I don't have asthma.

Hi,
I have no answers but exactly the same symptoms. I’m going to the GP tomorrow. I feel completely well, only the cough. It’s now okay at night but bad when I go outside or exercise. Thick greenish brown phlegm but only when I cough, nothing from my nose. People have said I sound breathless but I can’t really tell.

I used to have hay fever years ago but haven’t for a long time. I did have really bad flu and bronchitis earlier this year so it might be linked.

I've been coughing for over a year now but all that sounds like how it started. Night time is worse yes. Stress can also make things much worse. They think I also have GERD so have been on high dose Omeprazole for a few months now (also don't have asthma) - it is helping.

legolimb · 13/07/2018 09:15

This is interesting as I also have a terrible cough at the moment.

My hayfever came back with a vengeance this spring - it had kind of tailed off after a few years of suffering.

The past few days I have had a tickly cough, which i can feel in my back too (am guessing my lungs).

I don't feel ill ill - just hayfevery. I rarely get ill so perhaps it's the hayfever.

I hope you soon feel better - maybe once all the pollen is washed away by some rain we'll all feel clearer.

Did you make it to the doctor parrotonmyshoulder?

I had three awful nights in a row with the last two nights being very bad, coughing very bad. A lot of energy in the coughs with puking up phlegm.

I have chronic rhinitis and sinus problems (dustmite/ mould allergy) and have had terrible hayfever this year. I have had a cough also, for the last few months. Mine is mainly in the mornings and I think I have figured out why - I think I have post nasal drip caused by the allergies and made worse by the hayfever, in the night when I am asleep I think I get mucus from my nose running down my throat into my lungs. Not great.
I am on nasacort nasal spray for the rhinitis, and fexofenadine anti-histamine for the hayfever (good stuff) but am yet to go to the GP for the cough.

Thanks for your message Sealsong,

My doctor said this year is horrific for hayfever and a lot of people going to the doctors for a lot of similar issues.

Thanks for your reply. I had another bad night last night. I do have a lot of phlegm and mucus. Things make sense now with the cough. Phlegm and mucus dripping down.

Last night was another bad night. I slept in short intervals woken with cough and getting sick. I couldn't have another night like this. I'm exhausted. In the middle of the night, I cleared a corner in my bed and put my yoga ball there. I slept sitting up leaning on the ball. It's not ideal but it helped a lot.

I'm on my second bout of coughing this summer. Had my current one for over a week now and doesn't feel like it's budging. I'd assumed it was caused by a cold (I work in a school, so pick up all sorts!), but maybe it is hayfever. I went to the doctors the first time as I was sure I had a chest infection, but they said it was just a virus. I'm so fed up with it as I'm struggling to sleep and really wheezy all the time.

TellsEveryoneRealFacts · 15/07/2018 14:15

I use sudafed as soon as hayfever kicks in, otherwise I end up with the same.

Redundancy1 · 15/07/2018 14:26

did they give you a steroid inhaler? I have asthma and hayfever but have never taken steroid pills, the inhaler is very good. Perhaps you need one this year. I don't always use inhalers but at the moment I have to use two.

aibutonamechange · 15/07/2018 15:36

@BWrose get a cough medicine like Bisolvan Chesty. It's an expectorant and will help thin out the mucus so you're not coughing so hard.
You could probably benefit from seeing an immunologist about allergy treatment, like Oralair.

Biscuitsneeded · 15/07/2018 15:47

You sound like me. I always get a cough and a post-nasal drip after a cold, and just as that settles down it's hay fever season. I don't think I am asthmatic as I don't have 'attacks' but it's always been suggested as a cause for the cough (coupled with the nose issues making mucus drip down my throat). This year I bit the bullet and decided to use my brown inhaler night and morning, as well as the blue one to relive bad coughing attacks. Guess what. It worked! I never thought it would because I was so adamant the problem was my nose and not asthma, but apart from a blocked nose when i first wake up I am much, much better. This after coughing to the point of retching and vomiting, and losing bladder control, for almost a year. My advice would be to try ventolin inhalers and use the brown one religiously.

BWrose · 18/07/2018 12:09

The doctor didn't give me any inhalers. The doctor gave me a repeat prescription for steroids and nasal spray. Had to get a repeat prescription fulfilled on Monday. I do find the steroids tablets provide a little relief.

I'm still suffering very much with coughing. Another lady summed it up here very well - coughing to the point of wetching, vomiting and losing bladder control.

I tried steam inhalation yesterday. I was too sick to go to work. Three times yesterday I was using a steam inhaler cup I bought online with quick delivery.

Something worked for me because I slept very well last night and cough didn't disturb me.

Went to work this morning and it took me 45 minutes to do what is usually a 10 minute walk. Couldn't mover a step or two without choking on a cough.

This is such a coincidence, i have posted higher up the posts wondering if i have whooping cough,
I have this terrible cough, almost choking and being sick with it
It started with a very dry hacking cough, then came the horrible mucus which almost chokes me,
Went to the Drs she said my chest was clear, but once i start coughing i cant stop and nearly choking with it
I wasnt given anything at the Drs

BWrose · 20/07/2018 15:38

Princesstiasmum,

I'm sorry to read you are suffering with cough. I know a few more other people with coughs as well and all for different reasons.

Another person suspects hayfever
A child has croup
An adult has a virus if some sort
Another adult has pneumonia

I took a sick day on Tuesday and I was feeling so much better but Wednesday. Still not 100% but better all the same.

I went to bed last night propped up but then I kept sinking into my pillows and the cough was bothering me last night again, to the point of bring up phelgm. Not as often as other nights but troublesome all the same.

Getting into work then (after walking), I had a few people suggest to go back to the doctor and that I may need an antibiotic.

It's so hard to know what to do. The fact that I got caught up in my chest coughing while walking this morning, says maybe it's more on the allergies/asthma side than a virus or something that may need an antibiotic.

I'm going to do my best for the weekend to rest to see if that helps and will play things by ear next weekend.

I'm ok when I'm up and awake. Some slight coughing but nothing major. A lot of it, is my lifestyle as well. Feeling rushed eating meals with some people who nearly find it offensive if I sit to eat or drink.

The major coughs come at nighttime and with excercise.
