DS aged 6 has lumps in his neck

Hi, everybody. My DS has had swollen glands on his neck in the past from colds and infections, but they'd always shrink once his ailments were over. I did discover lumpy bits on his neck last year along the route of where he had swollen glands, and just assumed it was the way the glands went when they shrunk.
Today I read an article by Delta Goodrem the singer who was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, and she mentioned finding a lump in her neck. Now I am paranoid and worried sick, even though I haven't felt these lumps in his neck haven't got any bigger since last year.
I got Glandular Fever 16 years ago and I've still got swellings in my armpit and under my chin.
But the sides of my neck are very smooth, as is my DD's, so I'm wondering if it's something I should be alarmed about.
I'm going to make an appointment to see his GP tomorrow.

See the dr anyway but my dd had glandular fever and it has come back numerous times. Anytime she's a bit run down , her glands come up.

He's 6 years old, BTW.

How old is he? My DS1 had a big old lump on his neck from birth (although we didn't notice it straight away). Turned out to be a totally benign condition that resolved itself.

Try not to worry about things you've read in the paper - it's almost certainly something and nothing.

Amapoleon, when her glands shrink back, do they get lumpy?

oh sweetheart i too have had a lump in myneck and had a scan a few years ago which didn't find anything but am going back to docs cos it's still there. i don't knw what to say but you're not alone it's horrible when something's worn and you can't put your finger on it isn't ti? esp when it's your dc(s). dd just recovered from yet another bout of croup so i'm kinda knowing how you feel (((((((((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))))

Lumps in the neck are quite common - they can be something called 'mastoids' which are generally benign. I had one removed from my gland 10 years ago with no issues. Also their is a little girl in my dd's class who is 4 who had one removed at Christmas with no ill-effects. It is worthwhile getting it checked as if it does turn out to be this, the sooner it is removed the better, for aesthetic reasons more than anything.

It feels like she has a pea on each side of her neck, I wouldn't describe it as lumpy though. Probably best to go to drs to put your mind at rest.

Thanks, Fransmom! I feel better after reading your post, and thanks to the rest of you, too for your replies. You're all so good. I just don't want anything to be wrong with him, he's so precious to me like my 2 DD's. I lost my parents 2 years ago to cancer (Mum died 4 weeks after Dad), so I can't stop worrying over the least little thing as I know we're all cursed with the Cancer gene.
Sorry for going on....

stop apologising girlie!!!!!! we all need support now and then.

i meant to say (in reply to your op) wrong

fransmom · 27/05/2007 22:42

my mom passed from cancer (ovarian) as well.
about four years ago-ish, i had cells removed from cervix as went for colposcopy and it showed white patches on cervix at top. had biopsies taken and they turned out to be pre-cancerous, cin I. so had them whipped out pretty smartish. i understand hwo you feel, it can be like you feel you're living with a timebomb sometimes can't it? not sure if it's going to go off or not, and then how bad it will be. i try and put it out fo my mind as often as possible cos i will not be beaten by it.

please let us know how you get on with docs?
you are welcome to cat me if you want to chat by email

Mumsnet's great- well, you all are. I've dried my tears now. I'm going to bring him along to the doctor tomorrow, hopefully just for reassurance more than anything.
Thanks very much.
