Bleeding under toe nail - GP?

LAAA · 10/07/2018 19:53

Kicked a shopping trolley this morning while wearing flip flops - the pain! I caught my little toe and it fucking hurts. The kicked the couch a couple of hours later with said toe.

It felt like I’d dislocated it as I have previously (kicked a radiator that time 🙄 - see a theme?), but pain is mainly located under nail bed.

Google tells me it’ll be a subungual hematoma, I have purple nail varnish on toes which isn’t helpful so not sure if there’s blood, does feel like intense pressure though.

NHS website says go to a&e which seems over kill - what would they even do? If still as sore in a couple to days could a GP see to it? I can walk on my heel, and only very painful when it’s touched or knocked, just dull throbbing when resting.

Did same thing last week! Bloody painful. It felt fine after a couple of days. Personally I'd give it 48 hours and if pain hasn't died down go to GP.

Mine swelled up overnight so actually got more hurty before it got better.

Thanks my instincts say to leave it, but with the nhs advice I fear it’ll explode if ignored Grin

Have you done ice and elevation?

AnneOfCleavage · 10/07/2018 20:19

Ouch sounds painful. My DH did similar and pain so throbbing that I took him to A & E in the middle of night and they plunged a paper clip type needle (blunt) and it released the pressure and the pain went. They said we could have this ourselves but I wouldn't have been brave enough. Could be worth a try if still really painful.

LAAA · 10/07/2018 20:23

Elevation yeah but it’s making it feel more pressurised - if that’s the right word... DH suggested ice but can’t bear to have anything touch it so not up for that!

Holy crap AnneOf - definitely don’t want to go up now! Was bad enough getting toe popped in when dislocated Sad

It really will feel so much better if it's punctured so the blood can come out to relieve pressure. There's a chance that the nail may lift and detach from your toe, which would also relieve the pressure.

who!!!!!!! Won’t sleep now 😷

Would a GP do the mutilating? Such a pain in the arse having to go to a&e for such a stupid thing.

It would make your GP's day. It's v satisfying to do.

However where are you going to be seen quicker? This is straight up minor injuries stuff.

SilverHairedCat · 10/07/2018 21:14

Minor injuries would be more appropriate. I had my fingernail drilled there when I slammed my hand in a car door. Broke my finger too. Oh god it all hurt!!

But get it done ASAP, I'm afraid you'll be in for little sleep tonight if you have a blood blister under the nail.

LAAA · 10/07/2018 21:15

No minor injuries here so it’s GP or a&e. GP are quite good and I’ll be able to get seen tomorrow if needed. I’m hoping it’ll magically get better over night though! Plus dc have friends staying over just now so be a mission if have to go in tomorrow.

silver did the drilling/puncturing hurt? Or was your finger too sore to even notice it? I’m worried as it’s not too bad when not touched.

Bet it turns out i’ve just given it a teeny bang and am fussing for nothing.

AnneOfCleavage · 10/07/2018 21:21

Please don't be frightened about having that done OP as the pain goes immediately. Eek to having DC friends sleeping over so a trip to A & E is probably out tonight but go to GP first thing. Poor you though as although when it happened to DH it was 18 yrs ago I remember it very clearly and he was in agony. 😕

SilverHairedCat · 10/07/2018 22:27

Umm. Yes, the drilling hurt, but yes to instant pain relief. The nurse took great delight in my discomfort, as I was an on duty and in uniform police officer at the time! 🙄😂

Mainly my pain WARNING, MAY BE GRAPHIC was due to my finger being broken and the tip being split open like a popped sausage. Can't say I recommend that. Weeks of dressings and it's still sore when I whack the tip dead on about 9 years later. Not my finest moment.

LAAA · 11/07/2018 16:36

Well I’m obviously a drama llama as it’s much better today, still throbbing but just annoying not painful unless I knock it off something. Did struggle to sleep with it last night though.

Presuming that’s it going to fix itself now 😬

Phew that's a relief. Hope it continues to get better 🤞😀
