Any advice ?! When to a chiropodist thought she had sorted it, she hadn't a month on it's sore, red and infected again sorry TMI but when I try and have a look at it / clean it there is puss.

It's really painful.. should I be trying another chiropodist or a doctor/ nurse ? X

No advice but if you repost in sporner corner people there will have tips on how to ease the pain etc (just be prepared they may ask for photos as they love a good boil/carbunkle/ingrown toenail etc 😂)

You need to revisit your chiropodist.

I have (unfortunately!) had this..

There is the MK1 operation where the chiro snips away a bit of nail at the edge in the hope that this provides enough clearance for the tissue to heal.

If this doesnt happen then you need..

The Mk2 operation.

For this you WILL need a local anesthetic. I won't lie, it will hurt . This allows the chiro to snip and even bigger bit of nail off. This will work 99% of the time.

After this you WILL avoid anything that creates an ingrowing toenail ,ie incorrect cutting or picking.

To ease the pain and pressure, soak a ball of cotton wall in boiling water and press it against your toenail (as hot as you can bear and repeat as much as possible)

It's probably against all guidance, but I attack my own feet and cut out a vertical slither of nail with a pair of sharp nail scissors, which solves the problem for me

Oh god 😩😩 I have been bathing it in salt water a lot today and ALMOST managed to cut the ingrown bit will try again tomorrow

Go to a different chiropodist.

Limpopobongo · 08/07/2018 20:57

Would i be right in saying you only had the Mk1 operation last time i,e no anesthetic was administered??

If my experience is anything to go on, you may need to see a doctor first to check that you don't need antibiotics to clear the infection.
When I had an ingrowing toenail (many years ago) I left it far to long before seeking advice and despite the podiatrist trying for some time to save the nail in the end I had to have it removed.
To cut a very long story short the procedure was undertaken at my GP surgery rather than by a podiatrist and if you saw my toe now you really wouldn't know that I had had to have anything done to it.
Despite what the previous poster said I didn't find it very painful at all - certainly not in comparison to the pain I had suffered beforehand. The most painful bit of the procedure was the injection of local anaesthetic and until this wore off I was totally pain-free. I was advised to take paracetamol afterwards as required and before I had the dressing changed on day 2. Unfortunately because of the original deep seated infection my recovery wasn't as straightforward as it should have been and I needed to take antibiotics for several weeks afterwards.
My advice to you would be get it sorted sooner rather than later.

Thanks milly
I had antibiotics last time it flared up I saw the chiropodist and basically she just cleaned it out and packed it with cotton wool and then I had a week of very strong tablets and it was okay for about 6 weeks.. now it's hot/ painful /some puss again should mention I have a fungal infection in this nail only also! I will ring the doctors tomorrow I dread having it taken off due to the pain 😩

Went to the doctors he told me to pack it with savlon every day after the shower and if that doesn't soften it up and make it grow straight he will freeze it and snip the bad bit out ?!
