What dietary changes made the biggest impact to your life?

I just feel so shit all the time. There isn't much difference between how I feel now, eating constant junk, to when I cut out sugar, dairy, processed food and lived off sweet potatoes, salmon, broccoli, chicken, stir fry etc... Pretty consistently for 3+ months. Apart from losing a little bit of weight and skin looking clearer...

What made a big change to how you felt and how long did it take to work?

Btw I ate more variety than above it was just an example of the types of foods! Sweet potatoes instead of chocolate and sweets for example.

Cutting out bread. I realised bread makes me so bloated and cutting it out even for s little bit makes me feel so much better

Ketogenic diet. Research it. And the evidence. Changes lives. Becomes a way of eating rather than a diet, so not a quick fix, then back to scoffing what you like. I feel much better on it!

Best of luck Smile

Absolutely zero sugar other than whole fruit and the occasional date if I was really craving the stuff and no alchohol. Booze for me makes the biggest difference.

I had candida, SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) and a gut infection, and also have several auto-immune diseases and multiple health problems associated with those, which included severe nutrient deficiencies despite eating a pretty healthy diet already. I can’t tell you how ill I felt, my GP was totally unsympathetic (offered me anti-depressants) and unhelpful, so I sought help from a private nutritionist.

The biggest difference to me was giving up sugar, including fruit. Symptoms started lifting within days. I have to watch my dairy intake too, it affects me if I have too much. I do have a very occasional naughty, processed treat (chocolate or a dessert) now, my body doesn’t appreciate it at all and fights back but my mental health needs it!

I’ve been a strict vegetarian since I was a child, for moral reasons. I don’t eat gluten, yeast or soya, and have some specific food intolerances as well. I don’t have caffeine. I cook from scratch, try to buy organic … God, I sound boring. Most people yawn if I start talking about my diet, because I sound unhinged and rather hippy. All I know is that it has made such a difference to my health. I’ve ended up being one of those “you are what you eat” people.

To be honest, I felt so unwell that I had to do something, but it’s not always been easy and I do get fed-up with it sometimes. And I fall off the wagon occasionally. However, my health has improved unbelievably. And I lost nearly four stone, but definitely didn’t deprive myself of food.

I'm doing the 16 8 diet. Feel so much better and it's helped me cut out all the endless grazing I used to do after dinner. I'm not weighing myself but my tummy is flatter and I have gone down a belt size. I feel more in control and I'm making better choices about what I do eat in my 8 hour window.

Also following a ketogenic way of eating. Low carb and high (good, natural) fats. No sugar or processed foods. Cut back on drinking and prefer vodka soda/ red wine to beer or sugary cider.
I've lost weight but most importantly have more energy, better focus and improved sleep. Keto all the way!

Marking place

An obvious one, but one that perhaps a lot of people don’t remember is to drink plenty of water.
Don’t drink any fizzy drinks at all, only water or weak juice and occasionally a glass of fruit juice if I need something sweet

I think it helped my teeth a huge amount when I stopped drinking apple cider vinegar. Wish I had a time machine & could undo that.

Not eating anything after evening meal at 6 (not rigid about time if going out, but generally now in the habit) - cut cravings hugely.

FairyPenguin · 08/07/2018 22:51

Cutting down on alcohol and processed food made the biggest difference to me. I’ve also recently cut down on dairy and potatoes too. I’ve not cut anything out as that is too hard, but cutting down on those things massively just makes me think more about what I’m eating.

Cutting down hugely on alcohol.

Ketogenic diet... able to finally lose weight in my 40s!! High daily doses of Iodine (like about 700x what NHS recommends!) resolved my hyper & hypo thyroid.

A 6 month burst (in Winter, early bedtimes) of intermittant fasting gave me clarity and energy, but not nearly as much as a doctor-prescribed 2 month course of ultra high Vitamin D - 20000 units daily. Never felt so energised in my entire life. Will do another round this year - it was the one magical change I would recommend to everyone who is tired and run down. I must have been deficient my whole life and no doctor ever picked up on it until now (Germany, you refer yourself to specialists, brilliant).
