Abscess wound - how to pack and repack?

I had my abscess incision and drain surgery a few days ago and I'm finding it really hard to to get an appointment for a daily dressing change. I'm seriously thinking of getting my DH to do it? Has anyone done it at home? Any tips, do's and don'ts?

When I had mine I used the walk in clinic daily/every other day for 3 weeks. No appointments at the GP

Where was the abscess? Will you have the appropriate supplies? Will DH know how to recognise signs of infection? On the whole I would say no as you really need to practice a fair bit to know how firmly to pack, see if there is tunnelling, select appropriate new dressings if current ones are not working and make a decision on when to start leaving for longer periods. Community nurse here so have packed a lot of them!

It's on my bum.... but fair enough, the last thing I want is for it to get infected and go through the same ordeal all over again. I guess I just have to grin and bear it and keep on making those trips to the walk in clinic. Thanks for your advice!

I had to pack my stomach wound after surgery when it developed an infection, because my GP surgery didn't have a nurse. I used tweezers, lots of dressings given to me by the GP, and it was vile. If you have the choice, go to a walk in centre.
