Rotavirus vaccination experiences

Hi all,

My 14 week old son had his 12 week jags last week, he’s since had really bad constipation, even though constipation is not listed as a side effect.

Did anyone else’s baby have constipation? How long did it take to clear?

Thanks,

Could it be the heat dehydrating him?

Orangedaisy · 03/07/2018 14:04

No issues with constipation after my DDs’ vaccinations. Might it be a coincidence-is he dehydrated in the heat?

tenbob · 03/07/2018 14:06

I think the opposite is usually true - if they are going to be affected, it's diarrhoea

When you say constipation, do you mean he just haven't pooed as often as usual, or that he has other signs/rabbit poo?
Because it's normal for their poo schedule to change around a bit. A daily poo-er might start being an every other day poo-er, or a once a week poo-er might start going every day

But if it is constipation, I agree with PP - it is more likely to be the heat

We’ve been giving him boiled water cooled for the last couple of days, when it was really hot. It was quite cool in Edinburgh yesterday, but he didn’t poo. He’s mainly been in the house too, which is cool. The problem also only started after the vaccination, and it’s been hot here for a couple of weeks now, so I don’t think it’s that.

He usually poos once or twice a day. After the vaccination (weds) he did a big poo at 2am on the Friday morning, followed by a further poo at 7am, then nothing until Monday morning, and now he hasn’t done one since.

He’s farting a lot, and he woke in the night straining, but no poo appeared. He’s now crying every time he feeds as he’s backed up, and crying after naps, which I think is due to trapped wind.

We’ve given him cooled boiled water today, about 2/3oz and also had him in his vibrating chair, which usually works, but nothing so far.

We’re due to go camping on Saturday, but I’m not going unless this eases off.

We had vile smelling wind.

But DD2’s poo schedule had a change at the same time, which was just a coincidence. Went from tiny little bits every day to a big one every other day.

I’m hoping it is just the heat, and this sorts itself out soon! He’s normally so happy, it’s awful when he’s crying in agony.

I don't think jabs can cause constipation. Babies are always changing and sometimes it coincides with vaccinations.

Princess9891 · 03/07/2018 14:31

You should not be giving your 14 week old any water at all. Their kidneys can't handle it on top of the formula.

Naurts · 03/07/2018 14:36

I thought cooled boiled water was recommended in the heat for formula fed babies?

I think it’s the RotaVirus that has caused the constipation rather than the injections, apologies, should have been clearer!

Over the age of 6 months.. not 14 weeks!

Naurts · 03/07/2018 14:39

Not according to the NHS site, it says:

Fully breastfed babies don't need any water until they've started eating solid foods. Bottle-fed babies may need some extra water in hot weather.

For babies under six months, use water from the mains tap in the kitchen. You will need to boil then cool the tap water as it's not sterile straight from the tap. Water for babies over six months doesn't need to be boiled.

It's not listed as a known side effect here:
www.rxlist.com/rotarix-side-effects-drug-center.htm

It does list diarrhoea and vomiting.

I strongly suspect that there is no link and your baby is constipated because of the heat and he's dehydrated.

My eldest had bronchiolitis quite badly just after her 12 week jabs. I initially put it down to a side effect from the vaccination and delayed getting help for her because I thought it would wear off. As it turned out it was a complete coincidence. Babies get all sorts of things, their bodies are just working out how to work!

Hope he gets some relief soon. i found that cycling my babies' legs worked well to try to get the poo out. And yes, give some cooled boiled water. I guess 14 weeks is a little young for even a tiny bit of pear or peach juice!

Naurts · 03/07/2018 15:28

Yea, I don’t like the idea of giving him prune juice, or anything other than just water or his usual milk at the minute. Poor sausage. Hopefully it’s just the heat and he does a nice big jobby later today!

@Naurts did it get better? Currently in a similar situation and need some hope!
