My three year old is just over 15 kg, so probably about the smae weight. I have no worries about my daughter. I thought 18 was the lowest BMI within normal weight range, well for adulta any way.

NotQuiteCockney · 25/05/2007 18:03

I think a certain degree of pudginess at this age is to be expected. Is he pudgy?

I really think, at any rate, that lots of kids slim up at 4 or 5. I think it makes more sense to look at weight at that point.

americantrish · 25/05/2007 18:19

thanks ladies... his legs (well thighs) are a bit chunky, but i have noticed his torso and waist are slimmer now. i guess with all the worries out there about childhood obesity, its hard not to worry. (and weight problems run on my side of the family, so i always have to watch what i eat...)

colditz · 25/05/2007 18:26

Ds1's BMI is 18.5, and he is considered to be overweight.

Bullcrap. He's fine. Runs about like a maniac.

colditz · 25/05/2007 18:30

I have looked at a website that states "Most children who are overweight are also obese..."

Sorry, but I don't trust their results. I have to buy slimmer fitting jeans for my son, how the fuck can he be obese?

I worry about all the idiots out there putting healthy children on low fat diets on the basis of results like these!

NotQuiteCockney · 25/05/2007 18:31

I really think three is far too young to worry about this. If he's active and eats well, he will be fine.

BMI doesn't apply to children AFAIK. Also it's important that under 5s eat a certain amount of fat for their brain development. I really wouldn't be worrying at all about this. Nothing wrong with going for a more healthy lifestyle and avoiding too much choc/cake/crisps etc, but other than that I wouldn't tinker with his diet.

americantrish · 27/05/2007 20:35

the thing is, he hardly is given sweets/crisps/etc....

didnt help with my SIL this weekend saying how 'heavy' he was

OP posts:
bozza · 27/05/2007 20:38

He is not even 3 yet. My DS at that age was quite chunky. Now at 6 you can see all his ribs, his shoulder blades protrude badly etc. A pattern that repeats over and over.

mummytosteven · 27/05/2007 20:49

unless your SIL is a paediatrician, I would just nod and smile and instantly forget.

going by my red book copy of the centile chart:-

3ft 3 = 99.06 = just below the 91st centile for height for 2.11 years

37 lbs = 16.798 kilos = just below the 91st centile for weight for 2.11 years

so basically he sounds to be in perfect proportion!

macmama73 · 27/05/2007 21:40

My DS will be 3 in July and is almost about the same weight. I would say he is "stocky" but certainly not overweight. He has always been within the normal height and weight range. I think your DS sounds about the same, and you should ignore your SIL (that's what I do with my SIL)

americantrish · 29/05/2007 09:30

thanks mummytosteven.... my SIL has taken child psychology courses before and on child development. she has no children nor has been around children very often. dh has also made comments lately about ds being 'heavy'. thank you for looking on the chart, i will plot it on ours and show dh.

trish - I was like you last year worrying about my DS1 and you know what? HV told me there was nothing to worry about that he was perfectly healthy and since august he has grown in height and stayed the exact same weight and seems to have lost the chunkiness in his legs. If your DSs height and weight are same centile then he is perfect!

americantrish · 29/05/2007 11:01

schneebly> i think its normal that we sometimes get worried about our child's weight.. i know for me this comes from my own upbringing and food/weight issues;- i had a look at ds's red book and he was in the 90% for height for ages and the 75% for weight for the same amount of time, so i guess his weight has caught up with his height! thank you for the reassurance
