HELP - is there 'dandruff shampoo' for children?

Both DD's (4 and 3 years) have got very dry skin on their heads which builds up into a very fine, cigarette-end coloured light crust(appalling description but couldn't think how else to describe it). To try and combat this, I encourage DH (who washes their hair) to really do his best to get all the shampoo out properly; use BodyShop's ginger shampoo on them; and then, when we get the build up, I sit them down and comb as much of it out as I can without rubbing their heads raw IYKWIM.

So that's the background stuff. I wonder if there's any kind of child-friendly shampoo which might help me along with it though - does anyone have any thoughts/recommendations?

TIA

sounds a bit like cradle cap - have you tried dentinox shampoo or any other cradle cap remedies?

Snowstorm · 25/05/2007 20:41

I wasn't sure whether you could still term it cradle cap at their age but I think it's probably pretty similar.

Is Dentinox the stuff that smells like moth balls?!

Three of my children have cradle cap like problems -like a yellowish crust on their scalp. The eldest is 14! The best stuff to clear it by far is Oilatum shampoo-it's 8.99 but lasts for ages and really works. I've used it on my 4 year old so ok for little ones as well and it has really cleared up the problem. It's like normal shampoo though so it will sting eyes - get them to hold a flannel over their eyes and tip their head back.

Ds got really dry scaly skin on his head a while back after a series of viruses. The doctor recommended coal tar shampoo which worked a treat - and left his hair beautifully shiny - but it STINKS! We switched to Alphosyl which is a coal tar based shampoo - not quite as strong and took a bit longer to work but smells much better.

Dentinox these days smells of roses - literally. Worked on both my dds dry scalps/cradle cap, and is made for babies, maybe worth a try?

We use a Rausch Willow Bark shampoo but have only found it abroad.

My Dd 4 has been suffering with a very dry flakey scalp and I recently tried my DH's anti dandruff 2 in 1 avon shampoo (tea tree and mint I think) and it has cleared her scalp really well but don't know if I would use it all the time on her. I did do a lot of brushing with a stiff brush as well.

My eldest dd (4) still gets cradle cap, and I still slop on a load of olive oil overnight and then comb it out in the morning, it takes a couple of goes but works a treat.

Sounds to me like sebborheic (sp) dermatitis which is basically grown up version of cradle cap.

i have it quite badly and I use tubs of coconut oil from checmists/boots etc its so cheap about 80p a pot and its great.

its hard and fragrance free in tub and when it warms in your hands melts into an oil.

leave it on for few hours or overnight (use old pillowcase) and wash out in morning it really does help and makes hair lovely and soft too.

DD1 is allergic to SLSs - sodium lauryl sulfates.

Try a shampoo without them.
