Talk to your anaesthetist about it. Both work fine for the operation. Which is best for you will depend on your normal health, etc & the anaesthetist looking after you will be the best person to advise on that.

On the one hand I like the idea of being asleep - on the other I do wonder if id recover quicker from a spinal.

Never had one so a bit wary

I've had plenty of GA, and one spinal recently..
I've found I deal with GA quite easily and am up and around and compos mentos within a few hours..

With the spinal, everything was very surreal going through the whole procedure but there was the worry that it wouldn't work.. I was a little more uncomfortable getting the drugs in etc as with GA it's all through the cannular... someone putting needles in your back is pretty scary. All being said, it was pretty painless but being able to feel the pressure and being conscious was weird. I couldn't tell you regarding recovery as I was on some pretty good drugs so it took a few more hours.

I've had a spinal twice, first time with a lot of IV sedation so I wasn't aware of the actual operation , second time I had morphine or fentanyl added to the infusion in my back so I was awake, I remember the whole op but off my face.

First time I was numb for 8-9 hours which helped with pain but meant I was flat in bed for hours and needed to use a bed pan and a wheelchair in the evening.

Second time I was given a much shorter spinal but needed a lot more analgesia.

Both times the spinal jab was painless just weird, the staff were absolutely wonderful - mine were gynae ops too. We had the radio on , I remember I had a person at each side holding my hand both times.

I would do it again if I needed more gynae surgery, I am terrified of a general for some reason (had 2 and very sick/vomiting after).

My youngest son will be upset if I have to stay in so I'm thinking I might get home earlier if I have a spinal?

I think it's potentially the other way around. They gave me pros and cons of both and I remember being told I'd get home sooner with a short general anaesthetic as opposed to a spinal. With a GA once you're awake, pain managed, walked, eaten/drank and peed you can get away, with a spinal you need the numbness to go to mobilise first and sometimes your peeing can be knocked off.
