Low carb diet. Works wonders.

JellySlice · 27/06/2018 00:11

I agree: low carb.

lowresidue · 27/06/2018 13:25

I am already on a restricted diet, low gluten, milk free and 'low residue' meaning fibre, so can only eat very small amounts of some types of veg and fruit , like for instance a banana if its not too ripe. or some well cooked broccoli.
This has helped my ibs considerably but still have lots of acid reflux. its like I have control /management of bottom half but top half still is complaining and hates me!

Seriously and sincerely, low carb. We're not cranks.

I don't vomit from reflux, but have the other symptoms, including chest pain so severe that work once called me an ambulance thinking I might be having a heart attack. I've had it for years and have been on Omeprazole since last autumn for it.

The medicine helps a lot, but not completely. Long before I started taking it I had discovered that going grain-free and very low carb improved my reflux no end. I could go for months without an episode. And any episodes were incredibly mild compared to previously.

Since being on Omeprazole I find that, at its best, the effects are almost as good as my low carb way of eating. If I eat grains, and if I eat a carb-rich diet, the Omeprazole reduces the severity of the symptoms of reflux, but does not control them completely.

Grain-free + low carb + Omeprazole = no symptoms of reflux at all.

I've been tested for coeliac (all clear) and am awaiting an endoscopy.

Do be aware that if you're taking Omeprazole (or any of the 'prazoles), that over time, you might suffer from malabsorption of vitamins and minerals. Pernicious anaemia (v. Low B12) is quite a real risk, as is osteoporosis. Also, Omeprazole can eventually stop working, but stopping taking it will result in acid rebound as the proton pumps come back to life, and can be worse than the original reflux - you have to wean yourself off it.
You may already know all this, but just thought I would mention in case you weren't aware.
Personally, I think all PPIs are the work of the devil, as they simply mask the symptoms without addressing the actual cause, and are handed out like sweeties by GPs.
I agree with everything that JellySlice has written, though - I have been low carb for two years now, no potatoes, rice, pasta or grains, and it has made such a difference!

lowresidue · 28/06/2018 21:40

NanTheWiser was beginning to think that the omeprazole wears off and is worse, in some ways.
I have never been able to get them regularly prescribed, GPs seem a bit stingy with them. So in the last 11 yrs been living on the large bottles of gasviscon.
if I cut out carbs to an extent, I will be left with eating lean meat , eggs to eat. the odd not so ripe banana, and teaspoon sized amounts of safe ish veg.

I might loose more weight, but on that diet I cant see me giving up movical at all!!

I think my upper gut was damaged when I had the food poisoning which left me with permanent bowel damage. I rarely had indigestion before then, but after vomiting for 3 odd weeks nearly constantly (and the rest) would surely damage any gut
I am going back to the gastro doctor, and get some help.
I have had about 3 tests for celiac and never had any positive.
Have only recently sorted out the ibs and have had the most pain free days in last 2 months than I have had in 11 years. Apart from the severe vomit inducing reflux have been at least, below the waist fairly normal for me!

Have you been tested for Helicobacter pylori? That's usually one of the first tests for digestive problems, and can arise after food poisoning.
Low carb is quite do-able, can you eat cheese and fish? Avocado? Take a look at the low carb diet section near the top of the forum lists.

JellySlice · 28/06/2018 23:10

Why low-residue, and how do you define 'safe-ish veg'?

lowresidue · 28/06/2018 23:12

no cant eat cheese or oily fish ( can make me vomit) unless plain white fish, avocado yes possibly, not sure re whole one!

have had lactose test, an ex ray and bowel transit test, 2 colonoscopy just to confirm ibs and return loop of bowel back in place etc etc.

have had antibiotics to remove bowel bacteria overgrowth.
lets hope gastro doc will do this helicobacter pylori test and sort me out!
