Daft question - why might my baby son's head smell?

This has been puzzling me for a while. I wash ds2 hair (not that he's got much!) every other day and change his bottom cot sheet twice a week but my little lad who is 12 months old always has a smelly head. Not a very nice smell. It is fine after a hair wash - next morning a bit whiffy. Anyone know why this is? I wouldn't normally post about such daft things, but I am wondering where this smell is coming from. Oh and can't describe the smell as it is like no other . dh commented on it this morning - so it's not just me noticing it!

I just wondered as I think (but could well be wrong) that diabetics and people with some other conditions taste a little different because of the make up of the sweat. (Wasn't there a thread about someone's partner who alledgedly smelled and diabetes was suggeted?).
I am not saying that people with diabetes smell.

Do you use any form of baby oil that might go rancid in the warmth?
Sorry - I'm fascinated by this now, and want to get to the bottom of it!

No - I don't use baby oil or any other products. Just Johnson's baby wash and baby shampoo

My daughter had, what I thought was, persistent cradle cap. GP told me it was, in fact, a yeast infection ie like dandruff. Treated it with Nizoral (sp?). Don't remember her head smelling though.

Or maybe the GP said fungal infection? [confused emoticon]

DS had a smelly head when he had craddle cap, it smell like goat cheese (yuk!), at the beginning I though it was beacause we were using olive oil but no, the problem disapear by itself. Now, I don't have idea what maybe causing it in your son, he is too old for craddle cap, isn't he?

I think you should see your gp about it, just in case it's something that needs to be treated with a prescribed medicine. But in the meantime, have you checked behind his ears. My ds (my first) used to smell something awful until I realized there was sour milk stored up behind his ears. When my dd came along, I cleaned well behind her ears....she ended up with a smelly belly button instead.

sorry, not exactly relevant to your message, but do you remember the smell of your newborn baby's head in the first week or two? it was so lovely, like a delicious biscuit...
