DS not taking any fluids -please help

DS has been poorly since yesterday. He has a temperature and has been throwing up. We took him to Dr's and he said wasn't anything serious (thank god)...possibly viral, he had a sore throat etc and to give him Calpol and keep his fluids up.

He was drinking up until about 3am but after that its gone downhill. He threw up most of his morning bottle and although I've been trying him all day with water, apple juice, milk, cup, bottle, syringe even! He's just tightening his mouth and crying everytime we go near his mouth. Any tips? I'm worried he's going to get dehydrated. I have a feeling he may have a molar coming through as he's crying so much and drooling loads....

Any advice appreciated as I'm worried

Oh dear, have you tried some rehydrating fluids? Just so he gets some benefit even if it's not a lot? Or ice lollies might be soothing?

dramaqueen · 23/05/2007 22:11

Ice lollies can help with sore throats. How old is he? Get some dioralyte in as well.

NikkiBFG · 23/05/2007 22:15

Oooh have got some rehydration sachets from Boots....its ok for use in children under two...he's 1 tomorrow...thing is, if I go near him with a cup or bottle, he screams....he obv has sore mouth or throat, so its getting anything down him thats the prob....he sucks fine on his dummy though...

You just have to persevere. He will take it eventually. Watch out for him getting floppy, which is a sign of dehydration. I would give up on the milk and stick with water plus sachets.

nannyogg · 23/05/2007 22:18

I'm not an expert but I think that just smallish amounts would be fine, so maybe you could keep dipping his dummy in water or juice?

Also if he's drooling a lot I think that's a sure sign that he's not dehydrated.

NikkiBFG · 23/05/2007 22:18

Yes I think thats prob more important now. He woke at 3am last night and glugged nearly 7oz so I'm hoping he will do same tonight...I've tried dreamfeeding him but he won't have any of it. Cries bitterly....

What happens if he goes all floppy or he won't drink tonight???

Have you tried getting a flannel, soaking it in water and putting it in the freezer for half an hour then letting him chew on it? He gets relief and fluids then.

whomovedmychocolate · 23/05/2007 22:19

Don't panic. If he still drools and has wet nappies, he's okay.

wrinklytum · 23/05/2007 22:20

How high is his temperature?
Is he weeing plenty?

dramaqueen · 23/05/2007 22:21

You will have got some fluid into him today, probably more than you think. Just keep offering it to him in various forms. It is very important to keep his temperature down so you may need to force the capol into him with a syringe.

NikkiBFG · 23/05/2007 22:21

Ooooh I'll do that tmw as soon as he wakes up - he's asleep now so won't suck on anything and if put in fridge, will be frozen solid....

I've spent all day trying to get fluids down him. Am so stressed with it! I managed about 2mls with the syringe and some very milky farleys as he never says no to farleys even when poorly so I save it for his poorly days and made it very liquid, but only managed about 4 baby spoonfuls

OP posts:
dramaqueen · 23/05/2007 22:22

Good point about the wee, wrinklytum. I'd forgotten that if they are weeing they are not dehydrated.

NikkiBFG · 23/05/2007 22:23

His temp was 39 yest but its down now due to the calpol. His nappies haven't been very wet in the latter part of the day, which is obv cos of not drinking but he's had two poos - not constipated ones and is drooling a lot

He's very very whingey when awake but ok when distracted with TV, toys or cuddles

whomovedmychocolate · 23/05/2007 22:32

yep sounds like your run of the mill teething whingebag!

Just keep trying with the fluids/flannels. BTW you will find actually they do defrost remarkably quickly in hot little hands and mouths. I use (clean) towelling nappy liners because you can roll them up in the freezer and when they are unrolled they get to chewable temp in about half an hour.

wrinklytum · 23/05/2007 22:36

I would continue with the calpol and keep trying with the fluids. If he is rousable, despite being whingy I would not panic. If he is noticeably not weeing much and does seem less rousable I would contact NHS direct or go to A+E.Have you tried ice lollies,or some ice cream?Just a thought.Keep an eye on his temperature and if goes above 40 would deffo contact doctors.HTH and he is better soon.

NikkiBFG · 23/05/2007 22:42

He is rousable and his temp came down nicely before he went to bed. We took him to out of hours GP yest as I was worried about meningitis etc but he said he's fine and didn't give him any cause for concern and to keep an eye on him - so I've checked him constantly for rashes, bulging soft spot etc.

He was actually playing peek a boo in cot with me earlier and giggling away at me pulling funny faces at him so he seems ok in himself but its just the fluids that is really worrying me. Am going to put flannel in fridge now for later and if that doesn't work, I'll sort ice lollies out tmw...ice cream seems a good idea too cos its prob very soothing for a sore throat....trust me to only have choc chip go right on your thighs type stuff in the freezer! Time to get some plain vanilla methinks!!

Thanks loads for all your help. Mnet is great

hi if he's still drooling he sounds like he'll be okay. But would definitely say to watch his temp and whether he is alert/rousable or not. If it starts to go too high or too low and he seems dopey or floppy, just take him straight to A&E - or call an ambulance if you are really worried. (This based on my experience with ds2 when he was 7 months old.)

whomovedmychocolate · 24/05/2007 14:48

How is he today Nikki?

NikkiBFG · 24/05/2007 20:05

Hiya

Thanks for asking. He took fluids this morning - I nearly cried with relief...have been giving him his bottle more frequently to make up for what he didn't have yesterday and to give him lots of opportunity to drink, so he had 7oz at 6am, another 7oz at 9.30am, 5oz at 12.30 and 2oz at 3pm...he wouldn't take anything before bed but I think he will be ok as he's had something in the day. He also eaten two cubes of food so although that's all he's eaten today - he refused anything else, at least he's had something!!

He developed a rash a few hours ago - all over but very tiny pin prick looking. We called Dr and did the glass test and all seems ok as he is lively, drinking, pooing, weeing etc so the doctor (who advised us over phone) thinks its viral in origin - apparently there is a lot of it around. So, we just have to keep an eye on him.

Worrying being a parent isn't it!!!

Nikki - so glad he's better. If it makes you feel any better I'VE GOT CHICKENPOX! I caught it from one of the little buggers at toddlers, my DD (seven months) hasn't got it, just me! Apparently there is an epidemic going round my slightly smug GP delighted in telling me today!

NikkiBFG · 27/05/2007 20:00

Oh no!!!

Hope you feel better soon!
