Why do children get bad breath when they are ill?

Both dd's have been ill today with a high temperature, and both have got a sort of 'metallic' smell to their breath. I have noticed this before when my dc's have been ill. Why is this?

I've noticed this too - I wonder if it's because the balance of the bacteria in their tummies is upset when they have a fever?

Jenkeywoo · 23/05/2007 21:25

No idea why but it is sure sign of illness - we call it 'ill breath' (original I know) - it seems to be related to sore throat type illnesses. When I was a teacher I would try to avoid the kids with ill breath as they seemed to be the most contagious. One day I was doing the French orals and one girls had struggled in to take her exam but was clearly ill and had the worse ill breath ever - I was totally stuck in a small room with her and sure enough I picked her illness and was ill with a really bad throat for ages and ages. one of the perils of being a teacher, although I never got headlice which was nice.

If they have not breen eating/drinking much and have been vomiting possibly ketosis???

MegaLegs · 23/05/2007 21:28

Is that the pear drop smell wrinklytum - ketones or something like that?

Infection in nose and throat also make breath smell bad.

yes, ketosis. I think it appens when glucose levels go down (usually after high temperature). Give plenty of sugary drinks.

franca70 · 23/05/2007 21:33

happens

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 23/05/2007 21:35

Throat infections cause bad breath.

Ketosis is a "sweetish" smell (although not nice.)

Bomper · 23/05/2007 21:42

Well, I know that dd1 has a throat infection, but not so sure about dd2 (a bit hard to get specifics from a 3 yr old!!) But I would guess she has the same thing!
