Am I going to kill myself by doing this?

My MIL is horrified that I'm taking 2 or 3 1-a-day antihistamine tablets atm. I'm taking one when I wake up and then often another at teatime and a third at bedtime. I'm still suffering badly with hayfever symptoms but they damp down for a few hours after I've taken a tablet.

Is MIL right? Am I going to die?

How long before the hayfever season did you start taking them? If you wait til you're suffering and then start you're playing catch up. Take a small dose all year round and you may never have a flare up again. Check with your GP that he/she is happy for long-term use. Worked for me.

You should be fine, depending on what it is. As others have said, u can take 2 tablets of cetrizine and loratadine. Why not take becomase nasal spray and opticrom eye drops to help with localised symptoms

The 'non-sedating' antihistamines can still be sedating in high doses. The sedating antihistamines are well known drugs of abuse They're also more likely to cause other side effects (relating to heart/bladder). If you're not getting symptomatic relief from what you're taking I'd echo everyone above - talk to a pharmacist/GP.

There is one brand, can't think which one but one of the most popular that do an over the counter antishistamine that you can take 3 times a day. I used that one when my symptoms were at their worse.

swingofthings · 22/06/2018 06:55

Just remember, pretty sure it's benadryl

Hercules12 · 22/06/2018 07:02

You're fine. They're licensed for 1 a day but only last for a few hours. I had to see an immunologist who said lots of people take several a day. I took 3 for years until changing to fexofenadine and now I take 1 a day.

You'll be fine. I am doing exactly the same but also using beconase morning and night. Also have eye drops and was prescribed an asthma drug and inhaler to help with breathlessness during this month.
My doctor told me to do this. He also said that own brand antihistamine are exactly the same as branded (same dosage) and the only difference is the brand and the packaging.
I also keep the windows shut when pollen is at its highest (morn and eve). And vacuum the bed and bedroom regularly so I can sleep.

It depends what antihistamine it it. I would advise asking your doctor first though. It probably won’t kill you, but never take more than the recommended dose of anything without checking with a medical professional first.

Apparently there is a small increase in the risk of dementia for people taking certain anti-histamines long term.
That was enough to make me battle on and only take if I have to.

I don't have hay fever but I did have a reaction to a contrast CT. I needed to take two different antihistamines at the same time (H1 and H2).

You should go to your Dr and discuss it, you might need something different.
