So sick of periods

Ahhhhhh. My head is away with such irregular periods.
I have always had irregular periods, was diagnosed with PCOS whilst trying to get pregnant about 8yrs ago. Thankfully we were lucky enough to be able to conceive 2 beautiful girls, however my periods have never really settled down any.
So that brings us to now. Over the past 9 months i have had approx 2 periods per month, each lasting approx 2wks and during these 2wks they are full blown heavy periods with clots and cramps. I am not on any contraception or hormonal medication as I hope to maybe have another child in the future and I feel if I go on the pill or something it will then take a couple of years to "regulate my body" again. How can I stop having so many periods and be "normal". I am obese and am working hard to lose the weight but still there's bound to be something else I can do. Even when I wasn't overweight I still was so irregular.

If you have 2 periods a month does that mean you never get a break from it full stop?

I think your first stop should be a gp or see one who will actually Investigate. That doesn't sound right.

Am not surprised sadly to read that your periods never settled down nor into anything like a normal pattern. The pill however, does leave your system very quickly after taking the last tablet but it can and does mask the underlying PCOS.

I would go to the GP about this matter as something is causing all these bleeds which are both heavy and with clots. I would also be asking that person for a referral to a gynae for further evaluation. In the meantime you may also want to keep a daily pain and or symptom diary noting all this down because that will give the gynae clues as well. Conditions like fibroids can cause heavy bleeding to arise.

Some PCOS patients find a low GI/GL eating plan helpful re weight loss and importantly too it is sustainable. Collette Harris has written some cookbooks with PCOS in mind and Verity is a useful website for women with PCOS.

Hi OP, I just wanted to sympathise, I don't have any advice other than it must be exhausting for you and worth seeing your GP. I understand your worries about future fertility if you take contraception but I think you should ask what the facts are. I always thought the pill exited system quite quickly not sure why PCOS would change this? I have PCOS but my periods went from 3 a year to heavy monthly after my second child. Never been obese but extremely hairy.

Hi All

Thank you for your replies.
I haven't always had 2 periods/month, but quite often and sometimes they last 2wks and sometimes a little less. E.g. I had a period from 19th May -1st June, 1 week break and then started again 9th June - still here now. Not easing much and still clots.

I was on the pill from 15yrs old when my acne was at its worst and the Doctor put me on the pill to help with That. I continued with the pill until I was approx 27yrs old when I got married and wanted to start trying for a baby. I haven't had any further medication since then. I have awful acne which is very painful at times, lots of hair around my jaw line and have put on so much weight recently, I am now 18st Shock

I have made an appointment with my doctor to see about investigating this further but just wondered if there were any others out there suffering with what feels like constant periods.

I feel like I cant even get intimate with by Husband at the moment Confused
