Just wondering if anyone can help? For over a year, I have had somethin wrong with stomach - basically for about a week at a time (not related to periods etc) my stomach 'loses it' - either very painful (think sharp stabbing pain like period pain but higher up) and nausea or just feeling very sick - worse after eating but not resolved by not eating. Have been to drs and had blood tests, samples, abdominal ultrasound scan etc, all show nothing, referred to gastroenterologist (sp?!) who gave me IBS drugs (dont help) and referred for endoscopy which agin showed nothing. Was referred to allergy specialist and followed strict diet, candida diet and drugs etc but not helpe either. Its flared up again this pm and just really fed up. Wonder if anyone can help, had anything like this. (No am not pg again before anyone asks although the amount of time I've had this.... !!!) Sorry this is long but am tring to distract myself and get better!! Tanks in advamce for any help/ suggestions

Yes, it was an ultrasound but Dr was quite sure it all seemed OK - I suppose an MRI or CT would show more but had to have arm twisted to go to Dr in the first place (last summer!) and played it down a bit so was just sent for scan to put mind at rest - had endosopy (sp) but didnt want to make too much of a fuss but after this week might mention it to Dr when I go for appointment and see what she says - Oh just one more thing, does anyone know if I can ask normal GP for repeat prescription that consulatant at hospital gave me or do I need to get consultant to give me repeat again?

don't see why GP couldnt issue it..

hope you find a solution

Coeliac disease can cause horrendous pain, just like described and I would insist your GP does one as undiagnosed coeliac is sometimes fobbed off IBS as the symptoms are similiar, (many dr's are reluctant to test due to cost) Bowel movements are also an indication of coeliac disease..have you noticed any changes in them when you get the pains?

jalopy · 27/05/2007 11:50

Sorry Horses, I asked a question then disappeared! Your symptoms still sound IBS'ish to me. Of course, it's a good idea to rule out coeliac or other food intolerances/allergies. Hopefully, you might detect something when you keep a food diary.
Do you, by nature, worry a lot? I do and this is reflected in my flare-ups of IBS.
BTW, You should be able to get your prescription renewed by GP.

To rule out a food intolerance you would need to cut out all likely causes for a week or so, and then introduce gradually. Cutting out all dairy (including lactose, cassinates in products), and wheat and soya would be a good idea, as they are the most common intolerances I believe. It will be tricky, but worth it if you get an improvement.

Yes, thanks going to eat very blandly this bank hol weekend and see if things settle at all - I already have no dairy (except for perhaps a tiny bit of cheese one a month ish) so think thats alreay out - wheat etc wise, will try again bit did have a 2 month stint of meat, fish, fruit and veg and it still managed to cause trouble - went back to consulatnt to be told that there was nothing 'medically' wrong!! hmmm! Jalopy - yes, I am a bit of a worrier - even when I'm trying not to be!! Dr did mention that IBS could be stress induced - do get worked up about stuff (even little things) so guess that wont help if it is that - thanks fgor your suggestions again

Hi horses, just noticed your post - I had a 'funny tummy' unsolved by Drs and was referred to a nutritionalist and Alergy specialist - had to follow the anti candida diet - at the time didnt think it was helping a lot - took the little white tablets and ruled out anything vagueley exciting from diet - when I was not eating wheat dairy onions, anything red or orange yeast it seemed to go away - also triggered by stress - even though I thoughtI was fairly chilled at the time - was quite hard to followq that diet long term but do go back to it as and when my tummy flares up - good luck and hope you find out what it is

loopylou6 · 27/05/2007 14:55

hiya horse, i think u should ask for a barium swallow test and also a colonoscopy

Hi all - just thought I would finish this thread with an answer (in case any of you were wondering!) Saw consultant today and after further tests he confirmed its a complicated version of IBS (with the main triggers being stress, tomatoes and organges of all things!)wheat and dairy (so not a lot then!!) Have got lots of tablets to take to get it under control for the tim being and going back for assessment in 6 months to seeif anythings changed. Just thought I would conclude this postand thank you all for your help, suggestions and interest- reading back I was very fed up when I originally posted and the fact hat so many of you replied with suggestions helped a lot especially when I had been sent away from doctors with 'theres nothing medically wrong with you so theres not a lot I can do - take some paractamol...' ringing in my ears - good old MN!! Thanks all!
