When to go to the GP about hay fever?

I’ve suffered from hayfever for as long as I can remember. I also have asthma.

Last year, I didn’t have ‘classic’ hay fever symptoms but instead was very wheezy and the ski around my eyes kept cracking and bleeding. This year, the inside of my nose is cracking, covered in scabs, my breathing is shallow and my throat feels swollen and itchy. I feel constantly exhausted and today I literally fell asleep mid-sentence at a meeting at work.

I used to go to the GP and get anti-histamines prescribed, but in recent years I’ve just taken a combination of different tablets, plus nasal spray and eye drops. I have an inhaler on repeat prescription.

Is it worth bothering the GP? I feel stupid thinking about going to them with something as common as hayfever!

If over the counter remedies aren't relieving your symptoms then go and see your GP - hay-fever can exacerbate a whole host of underlying conditions that wouldn't normally bother you

Thanks. They’re relieving the usual symptoms but then new symptoms pop up somewhere else! I feel like I need a gas mask to filter out all the pollen.

If you’re constantly exhausted, please see your GP. I self-medicated with over-the-counter sprays and tablets for years. One year my symptoms were so severe that I hadn’t slept properly for days.

Finally went to see my GP who advised that I also had a sinus infection. Was prescribed antibiotics and strong prescription only hay fever tablets. Was such a relief when I could finally get to sleep!
