What can I use on a sunburned baby?

Yes, I know, Evil Mommy for letting it happen. Dashed out of the house this morning late for swimming and forgot the suncream and ds's face is a bit burned on one side now from the walk home.

Is there anything i can do to ease it for him? Have dabbed some soltan aftersun on it but doesn't seem to have helped him any.

What about holding a cold flannel on it? Need to cool the skin and then moisturise lots to stop it drying out. Also give lots of oral fluids for the dehydration.

Hope he feels better soon.

A cool compress - wet flannel or the like - will soothe his skin a little.

I was told never put anything oil-based on sunburn, it will only serve to trap the heat in the skin.

Aloe vera!

BibiThree · 21/05/2007 15:33

Forgot to say, don't beat yourself up about it, no one is perfect and these things happen.

Sunyshineymummy · 21/05/2007 15:34

Agree with ST Aloe Vera is brilliant.

Seriously, slice tomatoes and / or cucumber very thinly and put this on

Sounds absolutely nuts I know, but I got horrifically burnt in Mexico deep sea fishing, legs over side of boat, strong breeze - did not feel the sun. I went to a restaurant and the lady owner brought me a platter of toms and cue out and put this on my legs, it was fab and really worked

Good luck!

he's breastfeeding like mad so think he's ok for liquids.

will get him a cold cloth now.

i don't think soltan is oil based but tbh i would prefer to use something natural to mosturise, any ideas?

I would suggest something as natural as possible like aloe vera gel! But maybe check with a pharmacist depending how young your lo is?

Don't put tomatoes on a babies skin, most babies come out in a rash!

PinkTulips · 21/05/2007 15:36

lol, too slow posting!

thanks all

Natural yoghurt.

PinkTulips · 21/05/2007 15:38

he's 9 months, have some lovely (organic ) cucumber in the fridge that the kids don't like so will try that.

he's hating the cold cloth

woo-hoo, just remembered my mom gave me a baby aloe vera plant a few months back which has been looking sad in the corner since so i've lopped a bit of that and squeezed it on him.

thanks again all, especially bibi for you kind comment

Yeah, the cold compress doesn't go down well, does it?! Had to put ice on DS's forehead when he fell off the bench at the gym the other week. He went mad!

I felt awful about that, but what people said to me was true, it happens to us all.

nearlythere · 21/05/2007 16:10

a parasol!

Sorry! BUT seriously if it is worrying you then get him to the docs or the pharmacy- its amazing how easily done it is- especially when it doesn't look all that sunny!!!

PinkTulips · 21/05/2007 16:14

doc has a walk in surgery at 5 so if he's still suffering by then i'll bring him.

he seems cheerful enough considering and there are no blisters so won't panic yet.

lol at parasol, i had a towel from swimming in my bag but only remebered it was there and drapped it over the buggy at the end of our road... d'oh!
