Tinnitus

Hi ,
I’ve started to get tinnitus in 1 ear and really worried it’s permanent. Has anyone had it temporarily? Mine just started suddenly. I can hear everything fine. I only hear the ringing when it’s really quiet. Just worried I’m going deaf and the ringing will get worse. I’ve booked in to to Doctors this week.
I’m hoping it’s just blocked with ear wax. I’m just scared it will never go away. Just looking for some advice and hopefully stories

How long ago did it start? Tinnitus can be just a thing that people get and learn to live with, or it can be associated with another illness, which could mean it goes away, or not.

Don't panic. You can have bout of it and see it disappear. I've had it for about 3 years now, and the severity of it fluctuate a lot. I'm now recognising what triggers its 'attacks'. When it's only very mild, it doesn't really bother me and I hardly notice it. One trigger for me is certainly stress, but other things too.

Do you have any other symptoms?

You will be referred to an audiologist and a consultant. They will then probably refer you for an MRI. I don't know why mine started. Anyway they also send you to an audiologist for counselling. This is amazing and will answer all your questions.

I am working on my b12 levels just in case.

I have permanent tinnitus in both ears.
It can be stress related, or just ear damage.
Or temporary.
Just get it seen to by a doctor if you want to know what it is and why you have it.

I've have a hissing sound in my ears too, been going on for a few months now, wondering about B12 levels too. Need to get to docs.

Thankyou everyone for replying. I’m not so stressed with it today or panicked. Once I finally know why I have it, I think that will help. I easily panic my self when it comes to my health. Just hope it doesn’t get worse. Thankyou so much for your replies and putting me at ease.

I have had this as long as I can remember.

I have never heard silence ! Most of the time I ignore it and distract myself. It could drive you potty if you pay too much attention to it. Low sounds like humming or having a radio on low can help.

Good idea to get checked put with a doctor to put your mind at ease.

TuTru · 06/06/2018 11:46

My radio in the kitchen in on nearly 24/7 I cannot hear silence but when there is silence the sound in my ears seems louder.
So the radio is brill, radio 6 music, no adverts, not too much news (which can be depressing)

You may never find the reason op. If you see it as a problem the brain will continue to scan and try and resolve the problem. If you can accept it it should fade away. I was given a free white noise box. I'm supposed to have it on all night.

user1474462227 · 06/06/2018 12:21

Thankyou. I know it’s quite common and there’s so much more health issues one has to deal with so this is a small issue. At least it’s not to loud. Thankyou all for your kind advice.

Op, it's not a small issue at all. It's incredibly upsetting. This is why I recommend the counselling they offer. The aim is to reduce how much it bothers you and affects your life. Good luck.

Once I finally know why I have it, I think that will help.
As said above, you might never found out of it you do, it is likely to be by elimination. Don't expect a refer to a consultant and MRI just for this alone if you don't have any other symptoms, especially if you suffer from health anxiety as this is the most likely reason for it in the first place. It's a vicious circle.

I'm sure you would have google and read that anxiety can trigger tinnitus. Then again, it can be ear wax, an ear infection, even the menopause (that is if you are at that age!)
