if you have had a lumpectomy which sort of anaesthetic did you have please, and why? If you have local are you totally numbed out, or is general better?
Thanks

Never had one, but am an anaesthetist...
Depends on the lump - what sort/where it is. Presumably if they've offered you local then they think local will work.

By local do you mean literally local anaesthetic around the lump, or regional anaesthetic (where they numb the appropriate arm/leg/bit of body)?

Although GAs are generally pretty safe these days, they're not totally risk free. If I had something amenable to surgery under local I'd probably give that a bash before having a general.

I'd discuss it more with the person who's organising the procedure & see what they suggest. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your replies. I found the consultant intimidating - she referred to local or general without explaining pros/ cons or what that meant, and my only experience of a local is at the dentist! I was scared (breast lump) so opted for a general. I know I will have to have a general if they do further surgery once the lump has been checked but it seems I have a choice for this first op. Is it something I can ask about at the pre-op appointment , or would it be too late? Would I see the anaesthetist at that point?
