Neuralgia and medication

Hi all

I have neuralgia and I'm just at the end of my tether. The pain is excruciating. I have tried a few medications, most of which have not worked. I was then put on Pregabalin last year which was fantastic and the pain was gone completely. However, the pain has come back and despite several increases in dosage of Pregabalin, it now doesn't seem to be working. I seem to have put on a lot of weight since being on Pregabalin too and feel so down about it. I also have wisdom tooth on the same side of my face that I experience Neuralgia which is causing me pain. I am having it taken out in 3 weeks which is the earliest they can do it.

Does anyone else have neuralgia and have you experienced anything similar? Have you found a medication that actually helps?

xx

Have you tried amitriptyline? I have been on 25mg for dental neuralgia and it worked really well. You can be on it long term with no problems (though minor side effects such as dry mouth).

Hey, yes I was diagnosed with TN last year, the pain has been awful. I've tried tegretol, amitriptiline, beta blockers and nothing really helped.

So I changed my outlook, went for increasing B12, no other meds, GF diet, weekly visits to the chiropractor. It's cost me over £500 so far BUT she has literally halved my pain.

I'm on the waiting list to see a neurologist in July, obviously they want to rule out anything nasty too.

Sorry clicked too soon!

I still take paracetamol when the pain gets so bad and it takes the edge off.

Have you been referred? Ask the dentist for an X-ray on that side too so they can check it's not contributing towards the pain.

X

Thank you for your replies. I have tried amitriptyiine and it didn't work. My dentist has done xrays and there is nothing wrong with my teeth except the wisdom and I had neuralgia before that so that's not the problem (although it obviously doesn't help!), I do also have low B12 and have injections for that.

If I were you, I would go back to the GP and ask for a referral. If the medication hasn't helped, they could offer you another one to try?

Either way I think you need a reason behind the neuralgia.

Low B12 can cause nerve damage and therefore pain. Does the pain reduce in the days after a B12 injection? It can take months for the nerves to repair themselves once adequate B12 levels are restored. Usually the longer nerves take longer to repair. Low folic acid levels (which also damages nerves) often occur with low B12 so it may be worth taking some folic acid to see if that helps.

Forget to mention that the Pernicious Anaemia forum on healthunlocked is worth checking out if you have been diagnosed with a B12 deficiency.
