Hearing Aids - what to expect?

I have an appointment next week to have hearing aids fitted and I just wondered what to expect.

I think I thought that they would take my levels again (my test was around 9 months ago) and maybe do a mould of my ears, and then I would be back for a later fitting, but now I am not sure. The appointment type is called Adult HA Issue Open Fit and it says in the letter that you are welcome to bring a friend with you. I imagine this is because they will be fitted on the day?

Why would I want to bring a friend?? Will I be disorientated? Will I be able to drive home? I don't really have anyone to come with me as DH will need to look after the kids. I could ask a friend if necessary but don't want to waste their Saturday if it's something I can do alone.

It's also my DH's birthday weekend - would I want to go on from the appointment for a day out, or am I likely to want to go and bury my head in a pillow and hide from the world? (Or should I just take them out again and have a day out??)

I'm feeling a bit anxious about it all, as well as quite fed up as I am only in my 30s Sad.

Thanks for any advice!

I have to push mine in, I'm not sure how else you would put them in really so not entirely sure what you mean... But they shouldn't feel sore. A couple of times I've rubbed my ears and because of this the inside of my ear has got a bit sore where my hearing aids go. I've not worn them for a couple of days so the soreness has healed then put them back in and it's been ok. So I'd advise that first just to give them a chance to heal. If it starts again then you need to go back and get them to have a look.

I've never heard about this risk of dementia

can I say thanks to everyone who said you qualify for a railcard because of having hearing aids - I never knew that, and have just applied. Weirdly it's harder to get a bus pass from the council than it is to get a railcard Confused. My GP is having to write to the council for a second time to see if I can get a bus pass (which I qualify for, as the DVLA wouldn't let me drive as Im not safe, but the council are claiming that I was OK 18 months ago - not hearing related, just an accompanying rant Grin)

I couldn't believe how many birds there were chirping away when I first got my aids, plus the DDs laughed at me doing a "library voice" as I sounded too loud in my head.

You can sound quite loud when you get them. Although people say I'm loud anyway.

Years ago is gone to get a new hearing aid just cos it had been a few years since my last one. I was speaking on the phone on the bus and an elderly man was having a go at me saying I was too loud! I don't know if it was cos of new hearing aids or just how I am or he was an arse!

I have wondered whether I sound loud, but the people I've asked seem to say not. I definitely sound loud in my own head.
People talking over each other is annoying me. This is not something that ever bothered me before but now seems to mess with my ears!
I am going out tomorrow night, how do you handle the pub?? Maybe I will just take them out.

Gigusting, mine don't hurt at all when I put them in, I just sort of plonk them in and they stay. Maybe it depends on the shape of your ear, but I am sure it is not supposed to be painful. Sometimes by the end of the day I have a bit of a dull ache, though.

Your aids shouldn’t ms,e your ears sore. It’s most likely the case you’ve not got them in quite right if they’re hurting.
As for the question about dementia, I’ve not heard anything like that? Are you suggesting that early deafness and dementia are linked? I’m sure that’s not the case, I really wouldn’t worry.
