Single mum of 3 junior school age children- 37 - renting - working full time - children have no contact with father or family - no savings. I want to pay into life / critical illness cover - family has a history of breast cancer. Any advice ...... do i need life and critical illness cover - what insurers are recommended? I want to ensure there is something in place if i can not work and for the children financially. What will this leave them ?

We have life and critical illness cover. We also have critical illness cover for the children which pays out if they are seriously ill and one of us can’t work because we’re at hospital with them etc.

Find a broker or try going direct to Aviva, Royal London etc. Any other the big insurers. Do not go through a bank. You definitely need cover. Do you have a will?

See an IFA for proper advice

You def need to read the small print of any policy because certain illnesses are excluded. If you are working your contract should cover you for 6 months sick pay anyway so check that out.

The history of breast cancer is not relevant unless it is the BRCA gene. BC is so common: 1 in 8 risk. So unless you have had a genetic test I can't see you need to mention it- only 5% of cases are genetic anyway.

That’s not correct

Most insurers will ask family history for a number of conditions, including types of cancer with a familial link e.g ovarian, breast, bowel, and an incidence in first degree relatives, and/or at a “young” age (usually

This varies hugely from company to company and can be much shorter than 6 months so definitely worth checking.
