ANYONE STILL AWAKE? can a toddler go BLUE 'just' because they're cold???

DS1 went blue, face and arms, around 6pm and was shivering. He'd been playing in the garden with a vest, shirt jeans socks and shoes on. I'd say borderline whether he should have had a coat on - we'd just got back from a walk and he'd asked for it off. He was out for about 10 mins. My mum noticed the blueness when she read him a story when he came in for a cuddle.

Now he appears to have a fever - 38.7 from under his arm. Have given calpol but not sure if I should do anything else. Aside from these symptoms he doesn't appear unwell IYSWIM.

Anxious mother here, sorry, but can you reassure me?

omg - poor you. I hope he feels better soon. I knew a girl at school whose lips turned blue in some situations and her hands would stick if she became cold.

Hi there.

Is your son responding/reacting normally otherwise?

How long ago did you do his temperature?Have you managed to be able to recheck it?Are you able to take his temperature orally as this can be more accurate than axilla,or do you have one of those ear thermometers?

I take it he has no rash/vomiting/diarrhoea/pain when weeing/productive cough?

Sorry for 20 questions

UCM · 20/05/2007 00:35

Can I add, is your son fair, because my DS seems to go blue as soon as he comes out of the bath, but that might be due to him being very very fair.

liquidclocks · 20/05/2007 00:36

Thank you so much for replying, wondered whther anyone would. So it can happen just because of cold - phew!

maybe should have mentioned in beginning that DS1 had pneumonia twice last year and if you just add wheezing and the odd cough to his symptoms now that would be how it started. I'm still so jumpy and heard recently of a man dying of silent pneumonia - overreacting I know now but hey, I'm a mummy! I'm 99.999..% sure he'll be ok - I just hate that .0...01% niggle that I'll get it wrong! arrghh.

right, off to check his temp before i go to sleep.

UCM - yes, he's very fair and very light skin - unlike me or DH.

Wrinklytum - don't worry, it's usually me asking the questions! I've just done another reading, it's still high but come down slightly. Unfortunately I don't have another thermometer.

He's asking for water but I did offer it to him when I gave him the calpol...

I think I'm going to have to trust that he'd be making a fuss if he were feeling unwell, does that sound reasonable assumption?

Maybe he is just "brewing" a minor bug, hence the temperature!FWIW if over 1 you can give childrens ibuprofen (as well as having a painkilling effect also does have an anti-pyretic effect so could be used in conjunction with calpol to bring temperature down.)I would personally keep and eye on him,for any worsening of cough or wheeze but am sue you know this!.If you are at all worried you can contact NHS direct (I am assuming you are in UK )Hope he is better soon.

NappiesGalore · 20/05/2007 00:54

if his temp is responding to the calpol and he seems well in every other way... hes fine (in my humble opinion)

give you a scare sometimes, dont they?

UCM · 20/05/2007 00:54

I am going to tell you that because of DS blondeness, he is often described by neighbours and well meaning friends as blue. He has translucient skin because he is so fair.

If he was unwell he would be lying limp in my bed and if I changed the DVD to normal television he wouldn't complain. Thats how I know he is really ill.

But use your instincts. Does your boy seem ill to you. Are there any rashes? I know it's an obvious question. If there is anything about him that you do not think is right. Phone NHS Direct, and they will advise you. Probably tell you to go to A&E.

thanks all for supporting me in my 'moment' last night. DS is better this morning though definitely not quite right. I think I just have to set aside today for cuddling
