Oops - I would have been terrified - you've a right to be feeling fragile.

m little grandaughter had a couple of episodes like this and so we took her to casualty, they said it was a "vasal vagal"sp ?
im not sure what they said about why it happens because i was worried and not concentrating, but they said if it happened again just to stand her up slowly and she would be ok.it was all over in a couple of minutes. She has had no any more.Do ask about this possibility. It is nothing to worry about if it turns out to be this.

good to hear

we found with dd1 that she went more to A&E than the others because of anoxic reflex not because she was injured but because it was hard to tell if she had in fact been knocked unconscious .....we didn't get a diagnosis when she was young as before the internet was so useful and so were pretty much in the dark..the gp used to say well she is fine now (ie you are exaggerating)

it was a great relief to eventually find out it had a name and was harmless and idiosyncratic

consequently I don't really know much about it as although dd1 had some very exciting spectacular episodes they never caused a greater injury than she had already had from being whacked with a baseball bat, hit by the boom on a sailing boat, kicked in the jaw, falling off a bike et c etc

so hope the above is reassuroing if your LO is given this diagnosis if not then I hope it isn't anything serious...it does sound exactly like ras though

this used to happen to dd whenever she banged her head hard. the bit when the eyes roll and the body goes limp is scary, but that's when breathing starts again

Wallace · 20/05/2007 10:59

never took her to a doctor about it btw. Last time I remember it happening was when she was 4 hth

whenever a loss of consciousness occurs you should always go to the docs or casualty if at a weekend.

My ds did this when he was about the same age after falling over at Tumble Tots and banging his head. My rilliant gp took me very seriously and diagnosed RAS straight away. She said pretty much what others on here have said that it appears incredibly frightening but actually does them no harm and doesn't require medical attention. Luckily for us it has never happened since and he's now 2 1/2 but I'm always on the look out when he hurts himself.

Ooosp, you probably already got the link to Stars website !
Anyway, I was convinced my ys had RAS, but it was just Blue and pallid Breatholding in the end...and he went thorugh a stage where he could easily have like 5 episoodes in a week sometimes several a day, etc....he more or less has outgrown it, he is almost 3 now...but recently had an almost episode.
My es also had the Breatholding, but he only had like 3 episodes in as many years, so, wasn't that worried.
I did persist on the Hospital taking Bloods from my ys though, as it's not uncommon for it to be a simple iron deficiency. His HB etc..was fine though...but I prefered to know!
It's difficult to cope with those episodes, they are very scary and you feel so helpless as there isn't anyhting you cna do. MY ys would always be really tired and withdrawn afterwards, which made me think about RAS even more at the time.
