hi minno, ds had the same operation when he was 9 months, in Italy. We stayed two nights at the hospital, on the first day he had a few test done (blood test and the electrocardiogram). The operation itself lasted for an hour. He woke up as soon as he was back in the room, and I was allowed to b/feeding straight away. He was in a good mood and had a substantial dinner after only a few hrs from the operation. He was fine, and didn't even need pain killers. All the best!

Bubbaloo · 19/05/2007 22:46

My ds1 had surgery in February for the same thing. He wasn't allowed any food or drink from 4am on the morning of surgery(just water up until 7am)and the operation lasted just over an hour.He was home 4 hours later and after a sleep,he was back to his normal self, charging around at top speed.
He has a tiny scar where he had a couple of stitches and another small scar just above his groin. As far as I know the op was a success and he has his follow up appointment on Tuesday.

Thanks Minno-I'm sure your ds will be absolutely fine too.My ds1 had the surgery at the London Hospital and we live about a 40 min drive from there-he slept all the way home and some more when he got home.Afterwards he was back to his normal self, ate a HUGE dinner and also didn't need any painkillers, although the hospital sent him home with bottles of Calpol and Neurofen.
Let us know how he gets on.

hi, i am due to see the doc tomorrow about this. both ds' testicles are undescended and i was told at 1yr to go to the gp to start the referral process.
hopefully we won't have to wait too long.
how long did everyone else wait?

Bubbaloo · 20/05/2007 20:32

My ds1 is 23 months and had the op at 21 months. We didn't wait too long-probably about 6 months but I expect it varies depending on where in the country you live.

katyt1 · 21/05/2007 16:30

thanks bubbaloo

well we saw doc today and got referral for ultrasound and urologist but she couldn't give me any idea of how long a wait we might have, which i thought was a bit rubbish.
but she said she could feel both were there so that's a relief.

hopefully we will hear soon.

minno · 22/05/2007 09:06

katy1: my gp referred ds at 3 mnths as he said if it wasn't in the right place by then it wouldn't happen. we saw the consultant in december & have just found out the op will be in august although it may b our hospitals policy to do the op at a year, hopefully u wont wait that long after he is seen. i dont think the childs age can b all that important as they said they used 2 leave the op till boys were in their teens years ago.

Well we have a date! his op will be dec 12th, when he will be just short of 19months. so i'm v relieved that it will be over soon and out of the way before baby 2 (due jan).

Anyone been through it recently?
Any tips?

Orchiopexy, what a great name!

mishymoo · 06/11/2007 10:20

My DS had this op done when he was 11 months. I was very anxious about it especially as it was under a general.

He coped very well especially since he couldn't eat anything from 6.30am and no water from 11.00am. They didn't operate on him until 5.00pm . I was so that the surgeon didn't take the babies in first/earlier in the afternoon.

My husband took him down to theatre (I couldn't do it) and held him while the anaesthetic was given. He was in theatre for about an 1 hour. He was a little upset when he came round but soon settled. He guzzled his milk, 2 yoghurts and a bowl of pasta within minutes of being back on the ward. He was allowed to go home 3 hours after surgery. He slept soundly all night and the stitches never bothered him at all. He was back to his normal self the following day.

MegaaahooohLegs · 06/11/2007 10:23

My DS1 had this last year at age 6 - they kept leaving them as they were retractile as opposed to undescended and they hoped they might eventually stay down. Obviously with a 6 year old you can explian what is happening. He had two or three days of discomfort which we managed with Calpol and Ibruprofen and was back at school following week. They have to take care for 6 weeks after, no bikes, sit on toys (wince-and I don't have any!!)and no swimming or strenous activity. It's amazing how quickly they bounce back.

DS4 is due to have an orchidopexy as both his are totally undescended and he is alos having a hypospadias repair at the same time, poor lamb, that will be tough.

LiegeAndLief · 06/11/2007 13:32

No undescended testicles here but ds has just had an op to correct his hypospadias at 14 months. Just wanted to post to let anyone who is waiting for an op know that, if you are breastfeeding, I was allowed to breastfeed ds for five hours after all other food had to be stopped. Was so glad that I was still going and if I had known would never have considered stopping, as it made life much easier!

The general anaesthetic was quite traumatising (for me!), I held ds down while they put the mask on but he was asleep very quickly. He was fine when he came round, just very very hungry. Take LOTS of your boy's favourite snacks! Good luck everyone who is waiting for an op.

laura3ap · 08/11/2007 14:05

My little boy had one brought down when he was 18 mons old. He was the youngest on the consultant's list that day so first 'down' and was allowed to eat again very soon after coming back to the ward.
My top tips

  1. Have your partner take him into theatre to have the general anaesthetic
  2. Hide any ride-on toys for a week or so!
  3. Take his favourite sandwich or a snack with you for afterwards
  4. Be absolute certain that this is far more traumatic for you than him!
I have posted photos of my little one after surgery...a picture paints a thousand words etc!
katyt1 · 08/11/2007 17:17

thanks all,

mishy - i hope ds isn't kept waiting all day, it's the only real time he throws a fit, when you get between him & his food!!

mega - best of luck to your ds4 (4!), sounds like a big op to have both sorted at once, tho i suppose better to reduce the stress.

laura - thanks for your tips, i will def go with no. 1 as i think i would be like L&L and find that the worst bit.

thinking he may not appreciate lack of ride-ons tho...what about when we are out and about? he will rush to get on them then won't he?

looking forward to the 13th dec

merrykatyt1 · 10/12/2007 14:51

Well op day is nearly here.

Luckily I can't take ds into theatre as they don't allow pg women in there anyway, so that's one tip i will def follow!

We have to wake him before 6 so he can have some water, then take him into hosp for 7.45, thinking cbeebies and no mention of breakfast?!
hopefully we will all come home sometime in the afternoon and he'll go to bed as usual (maybe some calpol if he's slept funny times all day). and almost back to normal thurs.
We have a list of toys to hide away for a few days (a week?) plus some christmas presents he can have early if he needs distracting.

I think i'll be in the worst state, pg, hormonal, etc.
planning on crossword & cups of tea in the hosp canteen for 2 hours!!!

will let you know how it went, kt

cappy1 · 05/04/2008 16:33

Hi Mums

My ds is due to have his undescended testicle brought down on 14th April. have read your threads with great interest. If any of you are still logging on would be good to know how t all went

Thanks anxious cappy1

ScienceTeacher · 05/04/2008 16:47

My DS had bilateral undescended tested and iguinal herniae.

He had the op when he was just 2.

We had it done privately, but I imagine the NHS treatment is exactly the same - we arrived at the hospital at around 7am, and went to theatre at around 8am, having had all the premed checks. The surgery took about 45 minutes. DS slept until around 4 or 5pm and woke up in obvious pain. He nibbled on some toast, and we were discharged at about 6.30pm, with instructions to give Calpol to manage the pain.

He was genuinely fine the next morning, and healed very quickly. The scars were very neat and minimal, and they were almost invisible the last time we were able to check. DS is now 16, so it's a long time since we have been able to check.

cappy1 · 05/04/2008 16:49

Thanks teacher

What were the premed checks? haven't had those...

ScienceTeacher · 05/04/2008 16:49

cappy1 · 05/04/2008 18:06
