teeth being "cut out" of the gum?

My son's mouth is too small for his teeth and some are impacted. I am told they will need to be cut out of his gum eventually and that he will be sore and off school for a few days. Anyone's child been through this? Any advice to offer?

Are these first or second teeth? My mouth was too small for my second teeth, and my baby teeth wouldn't fall out so the second teeth were growing at a very odd angle. I didn't have to have my gums cut (shudder) but I had 11 of my baby teeth extracted and 4 of my second teeth (not all at the same time obviously) and all the other teeth grew out by themselves. I had to have orthodontic work done to straighten them after they had all grown.

second teeth, sorry should have said that but feeling a bit distressed about it. Baby teeth all gone now but no room for all the second ones. The ones that will be removed are not the front teeth but some alongside them. He will be in braces and retainers for a long time.

my dd has impacted canines, they are still hoping they will come round a bit as they have removed the last of her baby teeth. The dentist said to me that they would be reluctant to remove them and may expose them surgically to allow a brace to be fixed to them to bring them down, she will have to have some teeth out as she has a small mouth. Both she and ds2 have extremely crowded teth with the tooth next to the front one being at least 50mm behind the others.ds is 14 and ddnearly 13.

I had the 4 front molars removed, and it didn't really hurt very much at all. Cutting out impacted teeth sounds as though it would hurt more. I think the braces were the worst part of the whole thing for me because it went on so long. Everytime a brace was adjusted my teeth would hurt for a couple of days and it was such a faff keeping my teeth clean.

thank you. Still feeling worried and can't seem to find anything but wisdom teeth on google.

I have had 10 second teeth removed as my mouth is to small, although non impacted.

I have had 4 teeth removed from both top and bottom not the front ones but the ones at the side i had a top brace from age 11 to 16 and a bottom brace from 13 to 15. I then had 2 wisdom teeth removed when i was 21.

I had sore gums for a day or two,but i would think he would be quite sore for quite a while.

your probaly find he is given AB and a mouth wash to be used serveral times a day to keep his gums clean.

Sorry should have added ask if he can have gums numb before they do the injections, if he is not being sedated.

I had my gums cut when I was younger to allow a tooth to come through, I don't remember it being too traumatic - I did get a pressie for being brave though

My brother had to have teeth removed when he was in his early teens because his mouth was too small for them. He has teeth like tombstones! I don't know what impacted means, but I know from his experience (and from my experience having wisdom teeth removed) that where teeth had not yet come through the gum the dental surgeon had to cut the gum to get at them, but was then able to sew up the cut. This was better than where the teeth had already come through the gum, as in those cases he could only extract the tooth while leaving a hole in the gum - the gap where the tooth had been was too wide to close with stitches. It was far easier and more pleasant to recover from the cut gum than the open gum, as food would get trapped in the open gum. Db had a removable brace afterwards. Mum says she regrets getting the removable brace as he was very bad at keeping it in. She wishes she'd gone for the fixed brace after all.

thank you all. Impacted means there is another tooth in the way so one can't come through. Actually he has 2 impacted and two that have managed to get through - but in front of the others. Quite cross that all 4 were not removed last years when they said they would have to be done and the brace wouldn't be on long. But we were told they had to wait and now some have come out in a really bad position. Just hope the other are extracted before it gets any worse!

He will be getting a general anaesthetic because they have to be cut out.
