Stuttering - is this 'normal'?

DS1 (3)began stuttering last December when DS2 was born. We discussed it with the HV and decided that maybe it was emotional/psychological and he felt a bit 'put out' by the new arrival. It was getting better to the extent of it almost being gone but suddenly over the past couple of weeks it has come back again.

Has anyone elses child stuttered and if so was any remedial action needed?

dd1s best friend started to stutter when she was about 3, especially when she was tired - it was like her mind was working too fast for her mouth and couldn't keep up. She's now 4 1\2 adn has totally grown out of it, but her little brother who is 3 next week has started doing it. Not sure if its a common thing, but for both of them it seemed to be a developmental thing and only temporary.

Aparently it is quite common for under 5's to stutter. The trick is, not to draw attention to it and it soon disappears.

My DS began to stutter around that age too as did a boy my friend used to childmind. I think it may be that they have lots of words going round in their head and in their rush to get them out they stutter. DS still says "um, um, um" in between his words when he's telling me something as his brain works too fast for his mouth I think.

Ok we'll see how he goes over the next 6 months or so. We do try not to draw attention to it but it is funny sometimes. Especially when it takes him a couple of minutes to get a short sentance out!!

Dd started to stutter at age 3, a couple of months after ds was born. It was really bad for several weeks, got better and came back again. We tried to not draw attention to it at all and after a while (sorry can't remember how long but not longer than 6 months I think) it just went. I put it down to her being slightly put out with the new arrival and her physical side not quite keeping up with her brain development.
