how much is 2.5µg?

It's the amount of Vit D in a supplement that I take. I've been told to take 4000?

Does 2.5µg mean 2500?

TIA

4000 is probably IU (international units) whereas ųg means micrograms. Would need to work out how many ųg you need to make up 4000IU

dementedpixie · 24/05/2018 15:29

4000IU apparently equals 100ųg. Is it definitely 4000 you have to take

This may help

www.viridian-nutrition.com/blog/nutrition-news-and-views/what-does-an-iu-measure-in-vitamins

One microgram of Vitamin D = 40IU.
400IU of Vitamin D = 10ug.

For instance, one large cod liver oil capsule contains around 200 IU, 5 micrograms.

4000 does seem a lot, is this a short term boost for very low levels prescribed by a doctor?

Seeline · 24/05/2018 15:35

I take 3000IU daily which says it is equivalent to 75ug

I take it because bloods tests showed deficiency. GP gave me a loading dose for 10 weeks, and now I need daily supplement.

reallyanotherone · 24/05/2018 15:38

Numbers without units are meaningless. Might as well be 4000 elephants.

2.5 micrograms is 2500ng. So if they meant 4000ng, two of your vits would cover it.

You need to go back to whoever told you to take 4000 and clarify the units. Otherwise we’re all just guessing.

Does it not say on the leaflet inside the box? I have used several different formulations of vit d and quite often 1 drop= 400 micrograms

mckenzie · 24/05/2018 15:53

Thank you all
I shall go back to the consultant and ask for her to clarify; she probably did say and I just didn’t write it down properly.

there should be instructions on the box (eg. Take two tablets once a day) - if then then I'd go back to the pharmacy rather than the consultant.

'If they're not' not 'if then then' obvs

I’ve got calcium and got D tablets that I take as I have osteoporosis/osteopenia.
I’ve recent been diagnosed with MS and it’s the MS consultant who said 4000 at my appointment.

You probably need a supplement with more in as that would need you to take about 40 tablets!

Casmama · 24/05/2018 17:53

If you have calcium and vitamin d in the same tablet it is not wise to multiply up the number of tablets by just the vitamin d amount.

TyrionLannistersShadow · 24/05/2018 17:53

25ug of vitamin d3 is 1000 so you'd take 4 tablets for the correct dose. I have low vitD and take 3 per day, I use the Tesco branded ones , they're less than 5 euro for 90.

mckenzie · 24/05/2018 22:25

Thank you all very much for the posts.

I wasn’t planning on increasing my intake of the calcium / vitamin D combined tablets; I was just trying to find out how much I was getting from those tablets so that I knew how much extra Vit D I needed to take.
I’ll think I will stop the combined tablet and take separate ones now instead.
