General or local anaesthetic for LLETZ treatment?

Good afternoon everybody. I went for my smear test a few weeks ago, and last Thursday got my results back - showing high grade moderate dyskariosis and was referred for colposcopy.

My appointment came through the next day, and after the most worrying, scary nerve wracking week of my life I had my colposcopy today. The good news is as soon as she started looking around she said 'well I can tell you now there is nothing for you to be worried about.' Which put my mind at rest, I had a little sob hearing that after the thoughts that have been going through my mind this week.

She took a couple of samples to send off, but said to her eye she thinks thinks I have at least grade 2 (CIN2) changes and will probably need to have LLETZ treatment in a few weeks time.

My question is for anybody who had had this treatment, how was the procedure, how did you feel after - and did you have local or general anaesthetic? I asked her what she would recommend but she said it is entirely up to me, I'm leaning towards general but have never had one before so don't know what to expect.

Thank you all in advance Smile

Hi, I'm going through the same process at the moment - waiting for biopsy results after colposcopy yesterday but have been told it looks like low grade rather than CIN3. Hoping that is correct. However, I've been advised that I will need LLETZ under General Anaesthetic because I've had LLETZ before, in 2007, this time for CIN3 and under Local

The advantage of General is that you won't be aware of what is (ime) not a pleasant experience. The worst bit for me was the anaesthetic injections. I felt shaky and had racing heartbeat. But the staff were lovely, and I could go home straight afterwards
I've been told that the LLETZ under General will only take about 15 minutes so I won't be out for long, but I will have to be in hospital for the day and will need a couple of days to recover. I think it might be more fiddly to do as I've had treatment before which is why I'm having to have General

The healing process is then the same for both Local and General - no swimming, sex, tampons for 4 weeks, no strenuous exercise etc

I have had General anaesthetic once before and was bricking it about the whole thing but it was fine. I guess it all depends on how you feel about the procedure vs taking a General. Most people have LLETZ under Local, as far as I'm aware but it's obviously up to you
Hope this helps

If it turns out that you need the procedure (which you won't know until the results are back), why not try it under local? If it goes well then that's great, if it's doesn't there's always still the option to have a GA.
