What would make TSH go up and down quickly?

I’ve been having private thyroid tests occasionally for a while due to the fact I’ve had hypothyroidism symptoms for over 10 years and I’m trying to monitor what’s going on with it. My first two were many months apart (September and February) and levels were stable in the low 2s.

In early May I repeated it because I wanted my vitamin levels checked (turns out some are very low) but my TSH had gone up to 5.95. I was confused about it increasing so much in such a short time - I emailed the company and they assured me it was correct but offered me a free retest so I took it. In two weeks it’s gone from 5.95 to 1.83 - they assure me it’s right and to see my doctor. During this time my FT3 levels have been from bottom of the range to top, same with T4. FT4 has been between 12.5 and 15.7 so lower end.

The only other change is TPO antibodies which were 12 in September and are now 22 (only 16 two weeks ago). Normal range is 0-34 but I gather even at this level it suggests things aren’t quite right - I’m wondering if they’re going to keep rising.

Anyone had results like this? Seeing my GP in a couple of days.

Sounds like antibody activity,. Have you had your Tg antibodies checked?

For some reason the NHS don't check those, they only do TPO. On that basis they told a friend of mine, who worked for them would you believe, that she was perfectly well. Her TPO were negative. Her Tg were 4,000 and some odd!

Ask for a referral to an endocrinologist, say you want to choose your own and get a list from ThyroidUK or Thyroid Patient Advocacy.

Good luck!

My TGAB antibodies are really low - they were under 10, now 13.1, it’s the TPO antibodies that have gone up a fair bit but still within normal range. I guess if I wait a few months and test again they may have gone up again, but if my levels are up and down then it’s pot luck what I get on the day apparently!
