Painful barrholin’s cyst (can nhs fund for treatment?)

Hi, I’m a woman of 27 years old. I have two children, one girl aged 8, and a boy aged 3. I’ve had a Bartholin’s cyst on my left labia for 6 years or more, the past 4-5 months it’s gotten a lot bigger and it is painful after going to the toilet, I cannot have sexual Intercorse either. I’ve seen my GP and it’s not infected but it’s causes a lot of problems and it is very painful. My GP said it isn’t infected. Can the nhs fund for me to have it removed at all? My GP doesn’t seem to care on helping advise me, he said he wasn’t sure and he would find out and give me a call within 3 weeks. And time has passed. It’s getting more unbearable. Please someone help. Thanks

One more thought - I had a small cyst removed from my scalp a few years ago. I had had it a LONG time, and the GP always said they wouldn't remove it while it wasn't causing any problems (i.e. cosmetic).

Then it grew a little larger, and I started catching it with my hairbrush or banging it painfully on the wall while trying to retrieve something dropped behind the furniture. At that point, the GP was totally happy to refer me to get it removed. No issue at all.

Your bartholin's cyst sounds like it is absolutely affecting you more than my scalp one was, so I think a second opinion would be more than justified.

Ooh Fizzing can I ask you about the scalp cyst? My mum has dementia but she has one exactly as you describe - it's a sebatious cyst. Did you have to have stitches when it was removed? Mums is bothering her a lot at the moment, but she would never cope with stitches . . . .

Not good enough from your dr.

Make sure you tell them how painful it is, and how it affects you doing normal things.

I have a bartholins cyst, it started out as an infection but antibiotics calmed it down. What has remained is a marble sized lump. By the time I was referred to a gynaecologist, it wasn’t hurting much but remained as a lump. They did convince me not to have it removed, saying there were risks of scarring and blood loss etc. So be prepared to put up a fight, and keep repeating that you are in pain and it needs to be dealt with.

I had a sebaceous cyst removed from my scalp on the NHS.

If a bartholinscyst is like a pea sized white spot on your labia I had one of those too. I popped it myself Shock

Ffs. I'm so fed up with Doctors not taking gynaecology problems seriously! Definitely request a different GP and lodge a complaint.

FizzingWhizzbee · 23/05/2018 10:11

@FreshStartToday yes, I'm happy to tell you about the sebaceous cyst (because that was indeed exactly what it was). Mine was about the size of a garden pea when I got it removed, and yes, I had to have stitches - I think you would need to for any scalp cyst large enough to remove, because of the way the skin stretches over the cyst.

Also be aware that scalps bleed a LOT, and that you need to keep pressure on the site for quite a while afterwards to ensure that it can start to clot properly. I seem to have 24 hours in mind, though I can't quite remember. I had to have one of those ridiculous bandages around my head and under my chin to hold the wadding over the wound to provide the pressure. Needless to say, I stayed at home for that bit!! Not sure if your mum would cope with that either, if the stitches would be difficult.

Thank you Fizzing. Yes, I fear it would all be too much for her. She managed to pull a filling out, within 24 hours of having it done, because if felt 'different'. Hers is quite a lot larger than a pea now, however. I'll check with her GP to see what he advises

I’ve filled forms out to join a different doctors and I should be on the panel by Tuesday. Im unable to go to hospital or walk in centre at the moment as no one can watch my children for me. If it gets any more painful I will go to the walk in centre or hospital next Friday. I’m going to try and see what the new doctor says at this new surgery. Wish me luck for next week 😔🤞🏻X

It’s a little larger than pea size, it’s grown a lot in the last few months. No call back from old GP even though I rang them yesterday and today! I honestly have never known a doctor like him. It’s hard to see aniline doctor there aswell! 😢

Good luck. I had surgery two weeks ago.
I kept getting infections

Etymology23 · 24/05/2018 22:21

Fingers crossed they can help you! You might find different doctors at the same surgery was an option too?

Littlejayx · 24/05/2018 22:25

Hi all,

I have had two of these over the last two years, I ended up at a&E when one swelled to the size of a golf ball. It seemed to shrink by itself then after I gave birth it has disappeared? Is that normal?

I hope you can can this sorted OP, hope your new docs help z

Moomoo19911 · 24/05/2018 23:06

They won’t let me book with another doctor u less it’s an emergency appointment with someone who covers for that doc, and it’s normally the same woman and she is very rude. Otherwise I would of 100%

The dr has put me on a weeks worth of anti biotics even though he said there isn’t an infection. And he said he can refer to to have it taken away. But he wants to try the anti biotics first. They’ve not helped and I’m on day 4. I’ve filled forms in at another gp to change over doctors also. X
