And if so, was it effective? I already take antihistamines and steroid nasal spray but struggling with a lot of Mucus in my throat and hoarseness. Have been given this for a month.

I don’t have experience of montelukast for this but am wondering if the issue is bad enough to warrant montelukast then has your GO considered referring to an allergy/immunology specialist? Have you been referred for any tests like dust mite allergies or other allergies? Can your GP do the tests?

Olivo · 22/05/2018 17:48

I've not been referred, although I do suffer from chronic rhinitis and am allergic to cats and feathers. This most recent PN drip has been caused by sinusitis ( had a septum fix but not altogether successful) but I am fed up of trying to get it sorted.

Am used to the general snot but he hoarseness is annoying so tackling that first!

Too much nosesprays etc can make things worse!

My DD takes montelukast for asthma and it helps her chest/breathing no end.

Olivo · 22/05/2018 20:55

I weaned myself off the decongestant nose sprays as they cause rebound congestion. The steroid one I am on is meant to be ok long term.

Yes, the montelukast is usually for children's asthma but apparently can work on mucus caused by the drip. Different attack to antihistamines.

I am taking Montelukast Sodium 10mg.Tab Do anyone know if this is good for mucus in the throat. I have a lot of mucus build up in my throat especially in the morning when I first wake up. it Is so gross. My doctor is trying this on me. Been taking for 7 days now. I haven't seen any changes yet. Do anyone knows if it work for you and how long does it take to work.

No experience myself, but leukotrienes C4 and D4 stimulate respiratory mucus secretion and montelukast (and zafirlukast) works by blocking the receptors for these substances. If you have any kind of inflammation in the upper airways causing production of leukotrienes montelukast will suppress it.

BenjaminTheDonkey · 16/10/2018 17:01

Sorry, meant to add that momlu's mucus accumulation might not be caused by leukotrienes: it's more often due to increased activity of nerves releasing acetylcholine. In that case the montelukast might not do anything but something like an ipratropium nasal spray might help.

Yes, it stopped my postnatal drip. I take daily for asthma too - give it a couple of weeks, you should see an improvement.
Nasal steroids did bigger all.

MsForestier · 16/10/2018 17:06

Yes, ds is on it for allergic asthma

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/10/2018 17:08

*not sure if problems are just in children? But worth researching so you can make informed decision

MsForestier · 16/10/2018 17:08

Did look out for changes in behaviour, bad dreams etc but 15 months on no problem yet. It has stopped his cough and drip.

Tighnabruaich · 21/12/2018 10:04

I take it for my asthma, I didn't realise it could be used for other problems.
