Nerve pain running from wisdom tooth to jaw? PLEASE HELP!!

For the last couple of days I've had nerve pain running from left wisdom tooth to jaw but the actual tooth itself isn't sore. At times it feels like cold prickles stretching up to my eye as well.

No idea if this is relevant but my kids have just had chicken pox. I also decided to brush my teeth more vigorously the other day and that side of my mouth came in for the hardest scrubbing.

Please please reassure me. I have known people with the awful nerve pain that takes over your life and I cannot cope with the thought right now.

Neuralgia. You need to take the full recommended dose of ibuprofen every day for a few weeks and if that doesn't settle it, see your dentist. I had it for six months and ended up having 5 teeth out.

Five teeth! How awful. Why did that help if it's OK to ask?

I’d start by seeing a dentist or dr.
It could be the Templar manidipular joint the tooth or facial nerve issue, even a tiny broken jaw bone.
Next follow their advice. Unless there is a massive infection I wouldn’t be getting anything pulled...

Thank you both, I'll see the dentist as soon as I can. I'm just so anxious.

Does it sound like Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Taking teeth out won't fix it if it is and people often needlessly get teeth taken out, as pain is caused by a problem with the nerve and not the teeth. Definitely get it investigated

Apparently it's muscular pain because the muscle is horribly tense? The dentist said that when I clenched my mouth there was a bulging mass of muscular something or other that nearly took his fingernail off. There is no quick fix - I just have to wait for the muscle to relax again.

I wonder if botox could relax the muscle?

I don’t wish to alarm you but could it be shingles. I had Ramsey Hunt shingled that started in my teeth and jaw.

I had five teeth out because it turned out that the nerve pain was coming from an impacted wisdom tooth. My dentist spent six months telling me it was a sinus problem and sending me back to the GP. The GP spent six months telling me it was a tooth problem and sending me back to the dentist. In the end I was referred to a specialist who xrayed every tooth individually, found four impacted wisdom teeth and an impacted canine and I had the lot out in hospital three days later. End of problem.

Removal of impacted teeth is well not what I usually envision when someone says they had 5 teeth removed.
X rays (especially the nice PAN ones) can easily spot that type of problem.

alberta thank you for explaining. I'm so glad your problem was finally fixed. I knew someone with the trigeminal neuralgia and it seemed almost a death sentence (not that I know much about it). Any fixable outcome seems wonderful in comparison.

user154 Shingles was my first thought due to having chickenpox in the house. But apparently you're at no more at risk of shingles with chickenpox around. Again, at least it doesn't last forever.

grasslands I've had my wisdom teeth out as it happens. The dentist did an X-ray. He was very clear that my symptoms were classical muscular tension - not made worse by hot and cold, pain going up to the eye and out to the ear etc. I thought this was great news (being a quivering wreck in the dentist's chair) but he was disappointed not to be able to fix the problem. He told me to rest but obviously hasn't met my children!

Still slightly panicking it is trigeminal neuralgia but trying to rise above it.
