Hi. I am a bit confused as when I went to give blood last month at the fingerprick test I was told my hb levels were too low and to consult my GP. I went to the GP and she requested blood tests. I phoned up a week later and the receptionist said I needed a telephone appt with the Dr. So I asked the receptionist what the blood test results showed and she said it said low vitamin b12 levels. Fast forward to a week later when I have telephone appointment with the GP who tells me the blood tests confirm I am aneamic and she has prescribed a course of ferrous sulphate. Within this conversation the B12 wasn't mentioned once. We were discussing the fact that if I take the ferrous sulphate for 3 months hopefully that will be enough to get levels back up. Weird thing is I have no symptoms of anaemia at all so was all a bit of a surprise. When looking on the internet it looks like Vitamin b12 deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia are completely different conditions with different symptoms and different treatment so I am very confused. Can giving blood cause vitamin b12 deficiency? I know it can cause iron deficiency aneamia.

Contact the GP and say what you have just told us.

She doesn' t work Fridays and typically she is away for 2 weeks now so may see if I can speak to one of the other GP's next week. If I hadn't been playing around on google doing a bit of research I would never have known they weren't the same thing!!

Ask your surgery for a printout of your results and report back with all the numbers and ranges. Maybe you can call today and get the B12 and iron levels over the phone?

And ask your GP why they haven't mentioned the B12 when you see them next.
